Catharina Anna Philippina Kaftan was born in the Belowesche Colony, Tschernigov, Russia in 1822. The exact date is, at present, unknown. She died between 1880 and 1883 in Hutchinson County, South Dakota.
She married Philipp Heinrich Reiswig on November 13, 1839 in Kaltschinowka, Grunau, Jekaterinoslov, Russia. We have records that Catharina and Philipp had eleven children. Only five are known to have immigrated to America. They were Conrad Johann Reiswig, Katherina Maria (Reiswig) Delk, Henry Johann Reiswig, Maria Elizabeth (Reiswig) Werner, and Philip Johann Reiswig.
Catharina immigrated from Russia to the United States on the ship Suevia. She arrived in the port of New York on May 25, 1876 with her husband, four children, her eldest son, Conrad, and his wife and family of five children, and Heinrich Bechthold, his wife, seven children, and his mother. From New York City, all three families, traveled to the Wittenbery North Township, Hutchinson County, South Dakota.
Catharina was enumerated in the 1880 US Census. She was not in the 1885 South Dakota Census. We have a record that Philipp left to go back to Russia on October 15, 1883 and didn't return for two years. We a fairly certain he wouldn't have gone back to Russia if his wife were still living. This is why we believe that Catharina died between 1880 and 1883.
Even if she died before the church was built, Philip would have buried her on his homestead on the banks of the James River. It is a very pretty place, but not suitable for farming. For the same reason, it is the likely place that the Reiswig Seventh-day Adventist Church was built.

[Familienblatt] [Familientafel]
