He served in the Confederate army as a lieutenant during the Civil War and passed through many thrilling experiences.  On one occasion he was taken prisoner and was sentenced to be shot in lieu of a Union office of the same rank who had been killed by the Confederate army, but his personality so appealed to the Union officers that he was permitted to escape.
Dr. Miller was a relative of Ex-President Pierce.  At the close of the war he moved to Texas and in 1866 began the practice of medicine in Peoria (TX), where he labored as a physician for thirty-five years.  He was celebrated for his ability as a physician and for his fine qualities, being a friend of the poor always.  Dr. Miller helped widows and educated many poor boys, who afterward made fine men.  When in 1901 he decided to come to California to make his home, the people of Peoria were much disappointed. His wife had died several years previously and he was anxious to be with his children, Mrs. Henry Vaughan and family, and Dr. J.P. Miller and family, who were making their homes in Sebastopol.  He also has one son practicing law in London, England.
The grandchildren of Dr. Miller are as follows:  Robert, Viola and·Morris Miller, Mabella and Madeline Vaughan of Sebastopol, and two·children of the deceased daughter, and wife of Dr. Harris in Texas.  He·also leaves one brother, Jacob Miller, and family, near Galveston and·Deepwater, Texas, and one sister, Mrs. John White, and family, of·Morgan, Texas, and nephews and nieces in Arkansas to mourn his loss.

He was a native of Virginia, who went to Tennessee in his youth. He served as second lieutenant of the 12th Infantry in the Mexican War. After the close of the war, James, with his two sons, Thomas and Gideon T., immigrated to California, locating in Placer County, where they opened a store of general mining supplies. Not meeting with the hoped for success, James returned to his home in the south.
