Johann Georg Feiock [spelled Veiock in the Pfalz] was born about 1804, probably in Darstein, Pfalz. He was listed as 45 in 1850 & 52 in the 1858 census; but his sister, Jakobina was born in 1805 [based on her age at death] and he is older. I have not been able to find the Pfalz records for this family. They lived in Darstein, a village a couple km north of Vorderweidental. There are no church records after 1798, so one can only rely on the civil records, which do exist. However, in 1998, we were unable to spend enough time at the Standesamt in Bad Bergzabern to locate these records. One day we hope to do more searching there or obtain information by mail.
Johann Georg moved to Kischinew [now Chischinau, capital of Moldova], probably in the early 1860s, but certainly after the 1858 census. We have not found a death record for Johann Georg Feiock, but he died before May 1864. His son, Jacob [born 1837 Rohrbach], was married in Chotin [near Kischinew] on 3 May 1864, to Karolina Kulmann [who came from Uskerthal in Galicia]. The marriage records describes Jacob's parents as--Georg Feijak, a Dienst [laborer] of Lubel gesellschaft [a company in Kischenew] and Barbara, both deceased [the 1858 census says Barbara died in 1855]. Jacob was a machinist by Riegler [the name of his employer in Kischinew]. What happened to the couple is unknown to me, but they might have moved to Galicia, as I have had email contact with an American descendent of a Jacob Feiock, who emigrated from Austrian Galicia, whose age is awfully close.

The Beresan district
The colony of Rohrbach. Est. 1809
The village of Rohrbach was located in the Zerigul valley, 40 versts west of the Bug river, and 100 versts northeast of Odessa. It was only 20 versts from Landau, which was the administrative center of the newly established Beresan Colony.
The Crownland apportioned to the colony of Rohrbach amounted to 8,333 desss. (or 22,500 acres), a tract of land large enough to provide a living for 150 families. The first settlers, consisting of 26 families, were conducted to the Zerigul valley in the fall of 1809 by Chief Mayor Brittner of Grossliebental. The following spring, Commissioner von Rosenkampf conducted another 69 families, with their leader Michael Kuhn, from their winter quarters in the colonies in the environs of Odessa, to the place of settlement. Of the 95 families, 56 had emigrated fro Alsace and the Palatinate, 33 were from Baden, 4 from Würtemberg, and 2 from Prussian Poland; in all about 450 souls.
Since a large number of the earliest settlers were from the Palatinate, the settlement was named after the town of Rohrbach, in the district of Bergzabern. It seems that the first homesteaders were put up in stone dwellings. Each family also received the necessary livestock, farm equipment, and seed grain, for which the families were granted an advance loan of 100,490 rubles. The cash assets of the immigrants amounted to some 40,000 rubles.
In 1813 another 27 families arrived from Prussian Poland, and 4 more families from Württemberg. In 1816, according to the earliest available census, the village of Rohrbach had 130 families, with a population of 602 souls (312 men and 287 women). From 1817 - 19 another 22 families, of which 16 were from Baden, were settled. In the next two decades 31 families moved away to other colonies. Despite this loss, however, the population of Rohrbach was 683 in 1838, and rose to 1,178 in 1847. For the 217 families, the available area of Crownland per family was about 40 dess., or 100 acres.
Further on in the book it states:
"Out of partiality to the village of Rohrbach (Pfalz) from which they had emigrated, the two colonists Peter Schmidt and Peter Nuss, who arrived at this place among the first, gave the colony the name of Rohrbach." (As Peter Nuss is known to have immigrated from Rohrbach/Bergzabern, Pfalz, the Rohrbach referred to was in the Palatinate, not in Baden. Translator's note.)"
Departures: In `1818, ten families went to Grusinia, in 1823, 11 families moved to Odessa and to other colonies. (This could explain why Johann on his immigration papers says he was from Odessa. However, he could just have put that because it was a larger area).

Only the oldest daughter Sophia (who was engaged) stayed behind. In 1912 Michael Wiest was drafted into the Russian Army, and served for 6 years 7 months. (NOTE: The Seidel children did not return to Europe with the rest of the Wiest family)
5) Near Christmas 1925, Michael, Henry, and Ella (Keller) Wiest were on board the ship the "Sierra Coradoba" (sp) to Brazil. They lived in Brazil for 2+ years before coming to the USA in April 1928.
6) In April 1928, Michael Wiest and family moved to Ralston, Washington.

The storming of the Bastille on 14 July, 1789 marked the beginning of the French revolution . The monarchy fell in 1791 and soon a coalition of nine neighboring states declared war on the new republic in an effort to restore the monarchy. Early French setbacks were soon reversed and by the end of 1793 the allies were pushed back east of the Rhine; Alsace and the Palati nate were ceded to France and Mainz was recaptured. Among the foremost French military leader s was Napoleon Bonaparte. In early 1796 the 26 year old Napoleon was placed in command of the entire French army.
That same year, French troops invaded the Upper Rhine. The entire Rhine valley, Württembe rg, Franconia and Bavaria were occupied. The enemy troops "descended upon the German populace like swarms of hungry wolves. The contributions and requisitionings were terrible. The sold iers abused the land to the utmost: I blush with shame to lead an army that behaves in such a n unworthy manner ..", wrote General Jourdan. In 1799 Napoleon staged a coup d'etat and wa s made First Counsel with nearly dictatorial powers.
On 9 February, 1801 peace was concluded with Austria at Lunéville. The accord set, among other things, the Rhine River, from Switzerland to the Netherlands, as the eastern boundary of France. The results of a plebescite in 1802 made Napoleon First Counsul for life and in May of 1804 he was elected Emperor. The year 1805 saw the formation of the Third Coalition by Great Britain, Russia, Austria, Sweden and the Kingdom of Naples with the goal to forc e France back behind its former borders. On the same day, October 20, the French defeated th e Austrians at Ulm, Admiral Nelson defeated the French fleet at Trafalgar. In July, 1806 sixt een German states formed the Confederation of the Rhine, with Napoleon as protector. Under th is protectorate, several areas northeast and southwest of Kirn were ceded to Baden in 1803, encompassing the towns of Henau, Schwarzerden and Weitersborn. The years 1800-1810 ushered in hard times and the men were conscripted into the French Army. „Wiest“ (oder Wüst auf Deutsch) bedeutet nicht „verrückt“ oder „gemein“. In Übereinstimmung mit der deutschen Namensgebungspraxis des 15. Jahrhunderts bedeutet „Wüst“ als Cognom im Altdeutschen „Wüste“ oder genauer „Wildnis“ im biblischen Sinne. Die ersten identifizierbaren deutschen Wüsts stammen aus dem Dorf Dierbach im Herzogtum Zweibrücken, Rhein-Pfalz. Die Umgebung von Dierbach erfüllt die Definition von „Wildnis“ in zweierlei Hinsicht: (1) Es war im 15. Jahrhundert eine bewaldete Bergregion; und (2) es war ein Gebiet, das durch ein paar hundert Jahre Krieg verwüstet wurde, als die französischen (die Invasoren) und germanischen (die Befreier) Armeen in dieser Region eine Schlacht nach der anderen lieferten.
Deutsche Nachnamen wurden nicht einfach willkürlich gewählt. Als die Verordnung erlassen wurde, dass Einzelpersonen Nachnamen annehmen müssen, wurden strenge Regeln für die Wahl solcher Namen festgelegt. Für „echte Deutsche“ gab es nur drei Möglichkeiten: (1) Nehmen Sie einen Namen an, der mit dem Beruf oder Beruf des Haushaltsvorstands zusammenhängt. Also die Bauers (Bauern), Zimmermans (Zimmerleute), Schäffers (Hirten) usw. (2) Nehmen Sie einen Namen an, der sich auf den Ort bezieht, an dem die Familie lebte. Also die Schankweiler (weiler = Dorf), die Lingelbachs (Bach = Bach), die Frankfurter usw. Oder (3) Nehmen Sie einen Nachnamen an, der darauf basiert, dass er „der Sohn von jemandem ist, dessen Vorname Hinzufügen des Präfixes „Von“ zum Vornamen des Vaters. Also die Von Brauns, die Von Eulers oder die Von Fürstenberges (dies ist ein Beispiel für eine Kombination der beiden letztgenannten Praktiken (d. h. Sohn des Mannes aus Fürstenberg).
Schließlich war das altdeutsche Wort für „Kamel“ „Wüstschiff“ – wörtlich „Schiff der Wüste“.
