Reinhold Miller, 76, was born Feb 2, 1885 to Carl and Christine Miller at Hoffmingstahl Besssarabia, Russia, He migrated with his parents to the United States in 1898. The Miller family settled in Bowdle, South Dakota Dec 28, 1908, Reinhold married Kathryn "Katy" Pudwill Miller on Dec 28, 1908 in Herreid, South Dakota.
In 1913, they moved the family to McIntosh where they have resided for the past fourty eight years.
Reinhold was a railway employe for fifteen years after he moved to McIntosh. Before retiring, he was the custodian of the Corson County Courthouse for eight years.

Katharina "Katy" Pudwill was the daughter of Lorenz Pudwill 1856–1917 and Margaretha Maria Karch 1861–1894. She was of German decent born in Neu Danzig, Kherson, Russia.
Her family was planning on coming to America but some of her siblings developed whooping cough and they could not leave. Katharina and her brother Joseph Pudwill came to America with her Step Mother's family 8 Jun 1907 SS Potsdam, Rotterdam, Holland to NY.

About Katharina Pudwill's Emmigration:
Holland America Lines, Ship's Passenger List #31, SS Potsdam, from Rotterdam, Holland to New York, New York, 08 Jun 1907. It states that Katharina, aged 17, and her brother, Joseph, aged 15, both able to read and write, came from Russia, of German race, last permanent residence was Neu Danzig, Russia.
They traveled with Christian and Katarina Auctenberg and 5 children (Johann, 10; Sophie, 9; Jacob, 6; Wilhelm, 3; and Rosine) Their destination was Eureka, South Dakota. The Auctenberg family had $65 and the Pudwill's had $10. They were all going to join the Heinrich Johann & Magdalena -Mary Pudwill-Edinger Family. Magdalena Mary Pudwill Edinger was a cousin of Christian Auctenberg and was a eldest sister to Katharina and Joseph Pudwill.
In the Emmigration records, the Pudwill's appearance was fair complected, good health, and approximately 5 ft 5 in tall.
Whereas Christian Auctenberg was pockmarked and his wife Katarina Auctenberg was blind in one eye.
Katharina and Joseph Pudwill left Neu Danzig with the Auctenberg's by train to Lebi, Russia and then took a small boat to Holland, this portion of the trip took 3 days. They had to wait in Holland for 2 weeks before they could board the boat for America.

Lorenz was born and died in 1912 Neu Danzig, Kherson, Russia, now Ukraine.
He made all the arrangments to come to America with his 2nd wife and her family, but some of Lorenz's children came down with whooping cough and they couldn't leave Russia so he sent his daughter and son Katharina and Joseph Pudwill with his 2nd wife's family the Achtenberg's. This was very hard for Lorenz and his wife as the 2 children they sent were older children and they helped much with their large families care.
Lorenz and his wife never made it to America. Lorenz died in 1917. In letters his daughter received from family in Russia its said he died of starvation, that the Russian government had confiscated everything everyone owned, those who didn't cooperate were lined up in the streets and shot.

The Original Pudwill's came from Prussia and were some of the first German settlers to arrive in Alt Danzig in 1787 and became leaders of Alt Danzig colony from West Prussia. They came to Russia under the invitation of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. In 1762 Catherine the Great made a proclamation and had promised to pay for travel and give ownership to fertile lands for anyone who would come to live and work in her southern Russian lands, plus she promised many advantages besides the land. The Pudwill's would also later help settle Neu Danzig which was a sister colony to Alt Danzig.
After the death of Catherine the Great in 1796, The Russian Empire began to change and revoke many of the promises made by Catherine the Great. In 1870 the United States proposed the Homestead Act and many of the former German's who had immigrated to Russia came to America.
