    Irene M. Smith, 96, of Hornick, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.
    Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, June 22, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Hornick, with Pastor Catie Newman officiating. Burial will follow in the Westfork Township Cemetery in Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be held 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Sunday, June 21, 2015 at the church with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.
    Irene Mary was born January 25, 1919 in Holly Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Egger) Sulsberger. She attended Holly Springs High School and the National Business School in Sioux City, Iowa.
    Irene and Milton Smith were united in marriage on May 10, 1941. To this union, six children were born.
    She served as a mail carrier and the postmaster at Hornick for many years. She loved to dance, play cards, and work in her yard. She was the oldest resident of Hornick.
    She and Milton enjoyed the Holiday Rambler's Camping Group for many years. She was a member of the Hornick United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the Hornick Lunch Bunch.
    Survivors include five children, Garold (Deanna) Smith of Salix, IA, Bill (Pat) Smith of Hornick, IA, Connie Goodwin of Sioux City, IA, Dennis (Patty) Smith of Onawa, IA, and Diana Brink of Omaha, NE; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna Sulsberger; her husband, Milton Smith; a daughter, Carol Ann Olson; a son-in-law, Rene Goodwin; three brothers, Alvin, Don, and John Sulsberger; and one sister, Julia Baggs.

    Louis A. Sulsberger, 90, Hornick, died Saturday April 25, 1981 in a Sioux City hospital of a brief illness.
    Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in German City St. John’s Evangelical Church. The Rev. Walter Enstrom will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Willman Funeral Home of Rodney.
    Mr. Sulsberger was born Nov. 5, 1890, in Woodbury County. He farmed in Woodbury County until retiring 25 years ago.
    He married Anna M. Egger Dec. 12, 1911, at Holly Springs. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Church, a past director of the Holly Springs Public School and a member of the I.O.O.F. at Hornick.
    Survivors include the widow; two sons, Alvin A. of Hornick and Donald D. of Smithland; two daughters, Mrs. Irene M. Smith and Mrs. Julia Baggs, both of Hornick; a brother, Charles, of Anthon; three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Steinhoff and Mrs. Lena Bryans, both of Sioux City, and Mrs. Lucy Smith of Whiting; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchldren.

    Mrs. Louis Sulsberger, 95, of Whiting, formerly of Hornick, died Thursday, July 21, 1983 in a nursing home at Whiting.
    Mrs. Sulsberger, the former Anna M. Egger, was born Dec. 12, 1887, at Holly Springs.
    She married Louis Sulsberger Dec. 12, 1911 at Holly Springs. They farmed near Holly Springs all their married life. He died April 25, 1981. She had lived at Pleasant View Nursing Home at Whiting for the last 10 months.
    She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Church.

    Mr. Jacob S. Egger was born May 11, 1851 in Monroe County, Ohio near Miltonsburg. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Peter’s Evangelical Church.
    In March 30, 1875 he was united in marriage to Augusta Steinhoff who was called to her home June 2, 1941. In 1882 they moved to Woodbury County, Iowa with their three sons and have lived here until he was called to his heavenly reward September 15 at 9:30 p.m. at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 4 days. To this union 10 children were born. Henry, the oldest son, was called to his reward in 1903.
    He is survived by his 9 children: Edward, Albert, Charles, Rosina Koontz, Anna Sulsberger, Freda Sulsberger, Lyda, Lydia and Mary; brother Rev. Sam Egger, Van Wert, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

    Funeral services for Mrs. J.S. Egger, who died at her home on June 2, 1941, at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 26 days, were held last Thursday at the German City church, Rev. W. W. Kramme officiating. Interment was in the cemetery there under the direction of Becker funeral home. Music was furnished by a quarter-Mrs. J. Peters, Mrs. Orval L. Cox, Lester Harrison, and Everett Persinger, accompanied by Mrs. Ed Helming.
    Mrs. J.S. Egger, nee Steinhoff, was born in Monroe County, Ohio, on June 6, 1856. She was baptized in early infancy, and renewed her baptism vows in adolescent age at the time of her confirmation. These rites were conferred upon her by the Evangelical church.
    On March 30, 1875, she was married to Jake Egger. To this union were born ten children, one son Henry, preceding her in death 38 years ago.
    Mrs. Egger enjoyed good health until the last year when she sustained an injury from which she never completely recovered. During this time she received all the affection and care human hands could confer upon her.
    The Eggers were among the early settlers in this community. She will be remembered as one of the founders of the German City Church. Her long time membership in the church will ever live in the heart of the congregation as a memorial to her.
    Surviving are the widower, nine children, Albert of Dickens, Mrs. Oscar Koontz of Moville, Mrs. Louis Sulsberger, Mrs. Clarence Sulsberger, Charles, Edward, Lydia, Lyda, and Marie, all of Holly Springs; one sister, Mrs. Mathilda Rose of Bloomfield, Nebr.; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
