Louise Elsie Mortland was born to William M. and Hazel (Minor) Nihart, on December 24, 1922 in Verdi, Lincoln County, Minnesota. Later the family moved near Lake Benton, Minnesota to a farm, where she was raised and attended school. She later met and then married Neal Mortland on November 13, 1939. Neal was from Slayton, Minnesota. The couple lived in Lake Benton for one year and then moved to a farm near Arco, Minnesota from 1940 until 1972 when Neal retired. Neal died on December 22, 1987 at the age of 68. Louise still stayed on the farm. She worked hard on the farm while also raising their children. She also worked at Swift & Company in Marshall, Minnesota for a number of years.
Louise died Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Divine Providence Nursing Home in Ivanhoe, Minnesota at the age of 90 years, 5 months, and 18 days.
Louise's hobbies included card playing, Scrabble, dice, crocheting and knitting. She also enjoyed making quilts and blankets. She also enjoyed her 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Louise is lovingly remembered by her children, Larry Mortland and his wife Darlene of Arco, MN, Jeanne and her husband Leonard Popowski of Ivanhoe, MN, Gerald Mortland of Rush City, MN, Nick Mortland and his wife Nancy of Arco, MN, and Gail and her husband Murray Richardsen of St. Paul, MN; son-in-law Jerome Wonsewicz of Minneapolis, MN; two loving sisters, Lucille Strom of Woodstock, MN and Marilyn Wittrock of Pipestone, MN; one loving brother, Marlin Nihart and his wife Ruth of Huron, SD; and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal; a daughter, Joyce Mae Wonsewicz; her parents, three brothers, Earl, True, and Stacy Nihart; and two sisters, Irene Hind and Hazel Prinsen.

Will M. Nihart, Lincoln County, farmer, passed away at his home east of Lake Benton Tuesday, March 12th, after a short illness. Funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 p.m. and from the English Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Vordale officiating. Interment was made in Memorial Hill Cemetery.
Will Nihart was born in Louisville, Ohio, September 26th, 1878 and when still an infant migrated with his father and mother to Woodbury County, Iowa. His mother and father both preceded him in death when he was a child.
Mr. Nihart spent his boyhood and young manhood in Iowa, after which he moved to Minnesota where he engaged in farming which has been his life's work. After living in Minnesota a short time he was united in marriage to Hazel Minor of Brookings, S. Dak. and thy lived near Verdi, Minnesota untill eleven years ago when they moved on the place near Lake Benton.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Hazel; five daughters, Mrs. Irene Hind of Pipestone, Mrs. Louise Mortland of Lake Benton, Hazel Mae, Lucille and Marilyn; and three sons, True, Earl and Marlin. Marilyn and Marlin are twins and the youngest of the survivor, being six years old. He is also survived by one brother, Charley, of Mandan, N. Dak. and two sisters, Mrs. John McLarty of Hornick, Iowa and Mrs. Gustie Clayton of Seargent Bluffs, Iowa, and many other relatives. One sister and one brother peceded Mr. Nihart in death.

The death of Hazel Nihart, 71, of Lake Benton, occurred at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, on Tuesday, July 2. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church in Lake Benton on Friday, July 5, with Rev. Ronald Bergquist officiating. Mrs. Keith Clipper was organist, and vocalists were Mrs. Ed Stricklin and Mrs. Ronald Bergquist.
Pallbearers were Richard Prinsen, Michael Strom, Steven Nihart, Dennis Nihart, Ronald Nihart, Ronald Wittrock and Gerald Mortland. Burial was in Memorial Hill Cemetery, Lake Benton with Utoft-Johansen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr.s Nihart was born Oct. 14, 1890 in Iowa to Silas and Mertie Minor. She married William Nihart and they lived in Lake Benton until his death, later which she resided in Tyler a number of years, later in the Canby vicinity. For the past year she had lived in Lake Benton.
Survivors included five daughters, Mrs. Paul Hind (Irene), Mrs. Neal Mortland ((Louise), of Arco, Mrs. (LeRoy Wittrock (Marlyn), Mrs. Walter Prinsen (Hazel), of Pipestone and Mrs. John Strom (Lucille) of Woodstock; three sons, True and Earl of the Twin Cities, and Marlin of Huron, S. D.; 41 grandchildren and 11 grandchildren.
