John became a ward of the Orphans Court in Anne Arundel County, MD, after the death of his father. An Anne Arundel County guardianship record indicates that Henry Whalon (Whalen) was appointed guardian of John Gore, orphaned by his father, Henry Gore, on April 20, 1826 (John would have been 7 1/2 years of age). Oral family history indicates the guardian spent all the money (there was only one accounting on file in the courts, so this seems to bear this out). Oral family history also indicates he was in the Baltimore Blues Militia. On August 1, 1838 (John was almost 19), he was appointed as 2 lt 4th Infantry, Maryland, by President Martin Van Buren. He was twice breveted (Aug and Sept 1847, Captain and Major, respectively) for gallant and meritorious conduct in the War with Mexico. He was a good friend of Gen. Grant's; served in 4th Infantry with him & shared living quarters in Detroit, MI, in abt 1850-1852 w/Lucy, Grant, & Grant's wife Julia. In the August 1850 census, John was 31, Lucy was 24, and son James was just a year. John died of cholera after crossing the Isthmus of Panama with the 4th Infantry (per one Grant biographer, he keeled over while playing euchre with Grant and was dead by morning). He died on the steamer Golden Gate in Panama Bay off Flamenco island. “Some reports say that Grant disposed of the dead by burying them on Flamenco Island. Other reports say that he disposed of the bodies by weighting them down with cannonballs and throwing them in the ocean. Per his affidavit and 1840 census, b. 1819 (undoc info says 01-Mar- 1816, which must be incorrect). ajor WI Newton of Norfolk was a career officer with the U.S. 2nd Dragoons, forerunners of the U.S. Cavalry and served in Florida, Mexico, and various Western posts. He served in the Seminole Indian Campaign, Mexican and Civil Wars and died of disease contracted through exposure. As an officer, he was sent to study cavalry tactics at France's Saumur Cavalry School about 1838-1839. Accompanying him were General William J. Hardee (commander of the Army of Mississippi) and Captain Lloyd J. Beall (later, the only commandant of the Confederate Marine Corps). œThe officers were to complete the course of instruction offered at Saumur in one year and, upon their return, were to introduce French practices into the American service.
In 1867 and 1868, he and his wife toured parts of North Europe and Africa and were accompanied by their daughter, "Nina" (Cornelia). Part of the reason for the trip was for Major Newton to renew contacts with calvalry officers he had known at the Saumur Calvalry School. A letter from his wife to their daughter "Bessie" (Elizabeth) written from Algiers in 1868 indicates that Nina spent part of her time there sewing a "walking suit."

œTrained as a lawyer and having no other source of income, John Stanly followed his father™s example and launched his career by a judicious marriage. his bride was Elizabeth Franck, or Frank, whom one old New Bernian described as œa country heiress without cultivation, or opportunity .. [who] inherited from her father, Martin Franck, large estates in Jones County which laid the foundations of Mr. Stanly™s prosperity.
He was a Federalist U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1801 and 1803 and again between 1809 and 1811. He was educated by private tutors before attending Princeton University. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1799. In 1802 John Stanly Jr. killed in a duel ex-Governor Richard Dobbs Spaight, age fifty-five, over political views. Each man used a one-shot flintlock pistol. Each man reloaded and fired four times. Stanly had a bullet in his coat collar. On the fourth shot, the ex-Governor was killed. Spaight's descendants lived in the Stanly house in later years and neighbors claimed that "Ghosts" stalked through the house."
When his fatherâ„¢s estate was divided, the family home went to John, and he and his wife, Ellizabeth Frank Stanly, lived there for many years with their children.

.œWhen he was thirty, a chance visit to North Caroline introduced John Wright Stanly to Ann Cogdell, daughter of one of new Bern™s leading families, and he footloose entrepreneur decided to marry her anad settle down.
John Wright Stanly settled in New Bern, North Carolina in 1773 after failing in a business venture in Honduras. (He had been put in jail in Philadelphia in 1772 for bad debts). He prospered after settling in Craven County, and built a house in New Bern that cost $20,000. This house still stands as a public library and showplace. He was a patriot who contributed money for munitions in the Rev War. It was said that the Army would not have been victorious at Yorktown but for his financial support.
When a yellow fever epidemic swept over the town in 1789, John and Ann were among its victims. Within a month of each other, they were buried side-by-side in the cemetery of Christ Church, NC.,

James Blackshear, son of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear, became the father of James Blackshear, Jr., who was killed by Tories during the Revolutionary War. He along with his cousin Martin Franck had been appointed by the governor as lieutenants of troops to be raised in defense of the Province. Shortly thereafter they were captured by Tories, and each was tied to a stake and shot to death. The Blackshear family intermarried with all of the Chinquapin Chapel families, including Franck, Huggins, Stanley, and Koonce.
John Martin Franck, a German but not from the Palatinate, came to America in 1709, on the same ship with Philip Mueller and his family, who were from the Palatinate section of Germany. Franck, then a mature scholar of 27 years of age, fell in love with Jacob Mueller's young daughter, Civilla, (sometimes listed as Sevil), she was but 17 years of age and too young for marriage, so we have a case of the old love story, "he waited for her". Among their issue was a daughter, Catherine, who married first, Hardy Bush and had issue, after the death of Bush, Catherine married James Blackshear. The location of the Franck settlement was quite near to the location of the Alexander Blackshear settlement, a few miles from New Berne, (now Newbern, N. C.) the Blackshear-Franck community was then known as "New Germany.",

In 1765 James Turner and wife Kerenhappuck (sic.) sold their dwelling and former residence with 100 acres of land to William Lightfoot. This was described as the land Isaac Norman gave James Turner, 1733, on his marriage to Isaac's daughter Kerenhappuck. According to their descendants, they moved to Halifax County, Va. Kerenhappuck Norman Turner was a heroine of the Revolutionary War. A monument erected in her honor stands in Guilford Battlefield Park, Guilford, North Carolina. The History of the Morehead Family tells of her organizing the hospital corps after the battle of Guilford Courthouse and of how she found her grandson on Guilford battlefield and nursed him back to health in the New Garden Quaker Meeting House. In her old age, she is said to have spent much time with her daughter Sarah on Little River in Richmond County, N.C. She rode horseback and hunted with her grandsons. It was on one of these hunts that she was said to have been thrown off and her neck broken.

John Hutchings (1691-1768), a son of Daniel Hutchings, a mariner, and a grandson of John Hutchings of "Pembroke Tribe" Bermuda, succeeded George Newton as mayor of Norfolk and was again mayor in 1743 and 1755. He is buried near the south gate of St. Paul's Churchyard. He was one of the eight men who became Norfolk's first aldermen in 1736, typical of solid citizens who were responsible for the town's pre-Revolutionary prosperity.He was a member of the Sons of Liberty; wounded and taken prisoner in Princess Anne County while serving with the militia.,

One of the council of the province,n 1699, James Bowles, the only son and heir of Tobias Bowles, a prominent sugar and tobacco merchant of London and Kent, came to the Maryland colony to serve as his father's factor and agent. Well educated, well connected and wealthy, Bowles began accumulating large parcels of land in St. Mary's County, including a parcel called "Bowles Preservation" that would one day be Sotterley Plantation. He died in Maryland circa 1727.. He was nominated, but not confirmed, for governor after the death of his Uncle John Seynour.The General Index to Wills of St. Maryâ„¢s County, MD, lists his will, June 13, 1727. The Baylors came to VA from Tiverton, Essex Co., England. "It is said that the family had earlier migrated from Hungary." He was member of the House of Burgesses from Gloucester County in 1693, and from King and Queen County in 1718.
John BAYLOR/Lucy TODD had an unnamed son "whose fortunes we have no means of following." (6a) The BAYLOR family of Essex originated with the unnamed s/o John BAYLOR/Lucy TODD. There is also a tradition that the Essex family descended from another Robert BAYLOR, an uncle of John BAYLOR who m. Lucy TODD. (6) It is probable that Robert BAYLOR of King and Queen Co. from whom the Essex family is descended was the younger son of John BAYLOR/Lucy TODD. In addition to tradition, reference in the public records indicate a close connection between the family of Col. John BAYLOR of Newmarket and that of Col. Robert BAYLOR. [NOTE: If the 1710 birth date of son Gregory is correct, then Robert is probably the same generation as the John BAYLOR that m. Lucy TODD, since John's son John was b. 1705. However, the estimated birthdates of Robert's other children is in the mid 1720's. He could be son of John/Lucy if he was born around 1706 and son Gregory's birthdate is incorrect. If Hannah GREGORY's father was born 1682 or later, Hannah was probably born not much earlier than 1702, and Gregory not much before 1718/20. Richard was perhaps the leading Whig of his community during the period just prior to the Revolutionary War. During the course of the war, he was Judge of the Admiralty Court for Port Beaufort in 1776. He was a member of the legislature from Craven Co in 1778-79 and postmaster at New Bern.
 He was a Colonel in the Revolutionary Army and led the troops which drove the last British Governor out of New Bern. It is said that he entertained George Washington when he visited New Bern.

He was an earnest supporter of the Established Church - the Communion silver now used at Old Abingdon, the parish of "Fairfield," was presented by Lewis Burwell, and has "L.B." engraved upon it. He was an influential member of the King's Council; "Fairfield," later known as "Carters Creek," was said to be the oldest house in VA bearing a date on its walls, the incription "L.B.A., 1694," was cut on one of the group of diamond-shaped chimneys, which shows that "Fairfield" was built by Hon. Six of Major Lewis Burwell™s 15 children preceded him in death. In this time, a large number of children was expected and, llike the death of mothers, was accepted as the will of Providence.Nathanial Bacon™s will dated March 15, 1691-2 : Gives to œMajor Lewis Burwell all my lands lying and being in New Kent County to be managed sold and disposed of to the best advantage and the proper use and benefit of the said Lewis Burwells four daughters viz. Joanna, Elizabeth, Lucy and Martha now living.
œBy his death in 1710, the Burwells had forged instrumental alliances with members of the rich and powerful Armistead, Bacon, Bassett, Berkeley, Byrd, Carter, Cusis, Digges, Harrison, Lear, Ludwell, and Parke families.
Little is know about Lewis II. Presumably either his mother or the first of two stepfathers, William Bernard, a member of the colony™s council, arranged for Lewis™s schooling. Major Lewis  Burwell immigrated with his mother and stepfather after 1626 when his father died. There is a possibility, and Keith, in his Ancestry of Benjamin Ancestry strongly suggests, that Lewis grandfather Edward Burwell, who died 19 Nov 1620 in England, was the Edward Burwell known to have been in the second supply to Jamestown in 1609, stating that  that he later returned to England. This has not been proved. Like all our early virginians, Major Burwell  took the title the local mlitary establishment in Virginia gave him. He died at Carter™s Creek Plantation, Gloucester County Va. He married Lucy Higginson.
Lewis Burwell I immigrated to Virginia in 1635. He œcame to the colony to stablish full claim to land rights he had inherited from his father. This Lewis did not live long enough to establish the family with the top ranks of the Virginia gentry. it was Lewis II, who survived into his early sixties, who successfully developed the lands his father had claimed, as well as adding several thousand more acres and dozens of enslaved workers to the family estate. By 1700 the family had extensive landholdsi n and by 1720, the Kingsmill property. œIn 1775 Lewis Burwell IV moved to Mecklenburg, taking his black and white family together to Botetourt Court, and by 1782 he had 62 of his 172 slaves housed there. Another source indicates he came to the Colony in 1640 and is the progenitor of the family in VA. In 1647 he was a member of the deputation sent to invite Charles II to come to VA. He served as Sergeant Major of Militia. Second son of 6 children., , ,

John Cogdell, the immigrant, and his two sons, Charles and George, came to America in 1710 with Baron Christopher DeGraffenreid's party from Switzerland. The DeGraffenreid party settled New Bern, NC, named for Bern, Switzerland, birthplace of DeGraffenreid. History says this was the first important introduction into eastern NC of a most excellent class of liberty loving people. New Bern is the second oldest city in NC and was Provincial Capital for several years.

"The known lineage of the Virginia branch of the Taliaferro family begins with the Emigrant, Robert Taliaferro, who came to Virginia in 1645.  He was a man of prominence; he and his sons holding high state and church offices in the Colony.  He owned large tracts of land including one of 6,500 acres, which he patented jointly with Major Lawrence Smith. 
œthe correspondence of Mr. Wythe and Mr. Jefferson, published din the last issue of this magazine, accepts the Italian origin of this family (Taliaferro Family), and Mr. Wythe supposes the Italian emigrant to be Lawrence Taliaferro, who came to Scotland about 1500. But there is ground for even an earlier origin. Talifer or Telefer was the name of a Norma Knight, who came over with William the Conqueror in 1060.

The Burwell family of VA is one of the oldest as well as the most widely connected families of the Old Dominion; they are descended from the ancient family of Burwell, of Bedford and Northampton Counties, England, and thru the maternal side of the hosue trace their ancestry to John Bedell, of "Woolaston," Northhampton Co., England, who died in the 15th century, and with whom the pedigree in "Camden's Visitation" starts. [Colonial Families]. Edward was one of the grantees under the Charter of 1609 from James I.
Edward œhad been an early investor in the Virginia Company of London, the joint-stock company that financed the Jamestown settlement.
The will of Edward Burwell, taken on his death bed, œdesired his sister Sheafe to take his eldest daughter, and keep her as servant, and his sister Wingate to take his daughter Elizabeth..his brother Wingate to be overseer, and with him his brother Henry Beadles (sic) and Mr. Edward Blofield.

BY a deed dated July 28, 1648, found by W. G. Stanard among the records of York County, Va., Dorothy Wingate, relict of Roger Wingate, Treasurer of Virginia, conveyed to "her well-beloved son Lewis Burwell" all rents due at said Roger's decease, and confirmed to her by the King..the paternal line of Dorothy, the mother of the first Lewis Burwell, can be traced to a John Bedell of Wollaston, Northamptonshire, who died in 1485, with whom the pedigree in Camden's Visitation starts. The inquisition mentions several sons of William Bedell, besides Silvester, his heir, who alone is mentioned in the Visitation, and, among them, Henry Bedell, who is called "brother" in Edward Burwell's will; and the name of the last wife of William was Elizabeth, the Visitation calling his wife Bridget Power of Northamptonshire.

Charles Grymes and Henry Dedman jointly patented land on the south side of the Rappahannock, in Lancaster, York, and Gloucester Counties, 1645, 1650, and other years; and it is believed that Henry Dedman died in Gloucester County, where, because of the destruction of the records, nothing can be learned concerning his family. The Burwell family was of very ancient date on the borders of England and Scotland, particularly in that region known as the Eastern Marches. The name appears in early records as Baralle, Barel, Burwell and Burrell, in which last form it appears in the records of the reign of Richard II [Betty Warder's notes]. The antiquarian, Cole, said that the family first settled at Colton Hall in Buddington, Hoven Hundred, and afterwards moved to Rougham, Theodister Hundred.
