Thomas V., our subject, was educated in the district schools of his native county, and was reared to farming, in which occupation he continued, with the addition of distilling.  He was elected Mayor of Cynthiana several terms, and was serving in that capacity at the time of his death.  They had five children: Felix S. and T. Earl, sons, and Sallie V., Dorcas S., and Mary E., daughters.  Dorcas Saunders' mother was a Grant, and her mother was a sister of Daniel Boone, the old Kentucky pioneer.  James Saunders, brother of Dorcas, was killed at the battle of River Raisin.  Mr. Ashbrook was an officer in the Christian Church for several years before his death; his widow and oldest children are also members of the same church.  He was a Democrat.

Aaron was a farmer who came with his father from Virginia to Kentucky at an early day. He began life in moderate circumstances, but by industry and economy acquired a handsome property.  He gave to his children before his death about 450 acres, and divided by will 486 more, in addition to another farm of 230 acres which was to be sold and proceeds divided among the children. 
Aaron Ashbrook began life in moderate circumstances as a farmer on Indian Creek. He remained there until 1821 when he removed to Mill Creek, Harrison county, and there lived until his death. By thrift, industry and excellent management he accumulated an exceedingly large property and gave to each of his children four hundred and fifty acres, while at his death seven hundred more were divided among them by the terms of his will. His wife, Sallie Veach, was a daughter of Thomas and Jane (Huff) Veach, and Thomas Veach was a son of John Veach, and his wife, Jane Stewart. Aaron Ashbrook's father, Felix Ashbrook, was born in Virginia and died in Harrison county in 1843 at the age of seventy-five years. His wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Todd, was born in Maryland, and died September, 1838, at the age of seventy years. Aaron Ashbrook was born, lived and died in the Old Dominion. Felix Ashbrook was one of the valiant soldiers who held the fort at Boonesburg in the war of 1812.

Felix Grundy Ashbrook married Elizabeth Todd, and came here at the time this county was being settled.  They had three sons, Felix, Thomas and Samuel; four daughters, Jane, Cassandra, Martha and Elizabeth.  Felix married Elizabeth King; Thomas, Artemisia Bellas; Samuel, Susan Robertson.  Jane married Larkin Garnett; Cassandra, William Lake; Martha, Andrew Garnett, and the first husband of Elizabeth was a Mr. Remington, the last Lawson Oxley.  Mr. Ashbrook came from Maryland.  The men of the family have been prominent and prosperous citizens of this town and county, and the women have been [Page 28] distinguished for their Christian charity.  The Garnetts came from Virginia.  Like the Ashbrooks they have been good and prosperous citizens.  There is no one who can tell any thing about the history of the family; but the members of it who have resided in this town and county must have descended from good stock, if you "judge the tree by its fruits."
