Melissa was born May 27, 1818 in Milton, Chittenden, Vermont. She moved to Ohio with her family in the mid 1830's where she met George W. Shakespeare (b. Apr 2, 1814 in Portage County, Ohio). They married Mar 2, 1837 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. George died in 1856 in Cleveland. Melissa then moved with her young daughter to Wisconsin in 1860 where she met and married George L. Whitney (b. 1804 in Ellington, Connecticut) on Oct 16, 1861 in Watertown, Jefferson, Wisconsin.George Whitney died June 20, 1889 in Palmyra and Melissa died February 19, 1891 of Bright's disease at the home of her daughter in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Both George and Melissa are buried in the Palmyra Cemetery in Palmyra, Jefferson, Wisconsin.ObituaryPalmyra, Wisconsin 25 Feb. 1891Died--At the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E.R. Ostrom, of Trinity M.E. Church. Accompanied by relatives and friends the remains were conveyed to Palmyra on Saturday and laid to rest in the Palmyra cemetery, the services at the grave being in charge of Rev. Wm. Botzer, of the M.E. Church. Mrs. M.L. Whitney was born May 27th, 1818, in the state of Vemront--maiden name, Melissa L. Huntoon.She was married to Geo. W. Shakespeare at Cleveland, Ohio, became a widow in 1855 and came to Wisconsin on 1860. She was married to George L. Whitney Oct. 10, 1861, and moved to Palmyra in 1863, where they had resided until the death of her husband. She went to Milwaukee in April, 1890, to reside with her daughter, with whom she spent her last days. She was a member of the M.E. Church and of the Old Settlers' Association. She will be missed by her many Palmyra friends and acquaintances.
