    Charles was born September, 7 1869 in Evanston, Cook, Illinois. In 1880 , Charles moved with his parents to LaPorte, Indiana. There he met and married Edith Eaton(born November 29, 1871 in Wanatah, Indiana) on June 24. 1890 at the Baptist Church in LaPorte County, Indiana. Charles was a Linotype Operator at a publishing company. In the early 1900's, Charles moved his family to Illinois. They settled in Elgin, Kane, Illinois. Charles bought a house at 388 Congdon Ave., where Charles stayed the remainder of his life. Edith died November 6, 1944 and Charles died November 22, 1951. They are both buried at the Lake Street Memorial Park in Elgin, Illinois. 12/94

    George Washington Huntoon was born July 20, 1842 in Evanston, Cook, Illinois. He enlisted in the 8th Calvary in September, 1861. He was 5 ft. 6" and he had blue eyes and brown hair. George was a farmer at the time he enlisted. He re enlisted in the same unit in November of 1863. George served throughout the civil war. He was discharged July 17, 1865. He returned to Evanston where he married Louise Gamble(born December 24, 1842 in St. Louis, Missouri) on November 21, 1866 in Evanston at the St. Mark's Church. Louise was the daughter of General William Gamble with whom George served under during the civil war. George was a partner in Huntoon and Gamble Grocers. In the late 1870's George served as police magistrate of South Evanston and town Supervisor of Evanston. In 1880, George moved his family to LaPorte, Indiana. They returned to Evanston in 1897. In 1899, he moved the family to Lake Forest, Illinois where he was associated with Larkin and Huntoon grocers. The family then moved to Bloomington, California in 1905 and then resettled in Lake Forest in 1907. George and Louise lived at 14 Western Ave. George was a member of the Evans Lodge No. 524. He was also a master of that lodge at one time. George died October 4. 1922, and Louise died December 30, 1926. They are both buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. Huntoon, born here in 1842,dies-Geoge Washington Huntoon, of Evanston's pioneer settlers, died yesterday at his home in Lake Forest, where he has lived since he moved from this city 20 years ago. He was 80 years old, and was engaged in the bakery business in Lake Forest until three years ago when he retired. Mr. Huntoon was born in Evanston, July 20, 1842, the son of William and the grandson of George Washington Huntoon, Sr., the first of that family who came to this city from Ohio in 1838. His uncle, George M. Huntoon was Evanston's first postmaster. The first Huntoon residence here was a log cabin built on Ridge road on the corner of what is now Main street. Enlisting in the 8th Illinois cavalry, Sept. 18, 1861, Mr. Huntoon served through the Civil War. The record of John A. Logan post contained the following information. "Enlisted as a private, Co. F., Eight Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, Promoted to sergeant. Dishcharged at Culpeper court house in Virginia, December, 1863. Re-enlisted as a veteran." "Comrade Huntoon participated in the battle of Five Oaks or Seven Points and was with his gallant regiment during his nearly four years of service. Discharged July, 1865, because the war was over. Mustered into G.A.R. as member of Post No. 147, department of Indiana, March 10, 1866." He was past commander of the G.A.R. post at Waukegan and junior vice-president vice-comander of the State of Illinois, last year. Besides his wife, who was Louisa Gamble, the daughter of Gen. William Gamble, he is survived by six children. These are Jesse, Charles, and Walter Huntoon and Mrs. Louise Church, Mrs. Clara McGraw and Miss Ida Huntoon. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 6. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery where Mason's ceremonies will take place. The G.A.R. and the Loyal Legion will participate in the services.

    member of the Women's Relief Corps From the Biography of William Gamble Louise Doretta - born December 24, 1842 at Jefferson Barracks MO. She married George Washington Huntoon, who was born on July 20, 1842 at Evanston IL and died on October 4, 1922 at Lake Forest IL. George had enlisted in Company F of the 8th Illinois Cavalry and was mustered out with the regiment on July 17, 1865 as Sergeant at Benton Barracks MO. The couple had a son, Charles Eugene, who also served in the military.(11/2001) Obituary Taken from a LaPorte County, Indiana, newspaper-MRS. GEORGE HUNTOON-Word was received here today of the death last Thursday of Mrs. George Huntoon, age 83, formerly of LaPorte, of Lake Forest,Ill. The deceased woman was active in Women's Relief Corps work here about 30 years ago, and also in the Episcopal church. She left here about 30 years ago. She is survived by three sons and three daughters. Burial was in Lake Forest.

    William was born July 8, 1820/1 in Colchester, Vermont. He met and married Mary Ann Baker (born April 25, 1824 in Canada) in 1840 in Clevland, Ohio. They migrated in 1841 to Evanston, Illinois(at that time it was known as Grosse Point) where they established a small homestead. In 1842, the first teacher of the schoolhouse was James Baker, Mary Ann's brother. In 1850, William was elected as an Overseer of Highways for one year. William stayed in Evanston for fifty years(except for a three year period during the 1860's when the family lived in Michigan). During that period, William ran a stagecoach in Evanston. He also kept and inn for many years. In 1859, he was elected as the Director of School District #2. William was also active in the administration of the newly formed village of South Evanston. He also served as Street Commissioner and Village Constable of South Evanston for many years. In 1877, William was treasurer and secretary of the newly founded Utopia Club. During the 1880's, William served as Justice of the Peace. William and Mary Ann moved to California in 1891 with five of their six children(George stayed behind). William died January 5, 1899. Mary Ann died in November 23, 1900. Shuman of California who is visiting friends in Evanston, received a telegram last week Monday announcing the death on Sunday of her mother, Mrs. Mary Ann Huntoon. Mr. and Mrs. Huntoon were among the earliest settlers of Evanston, where they lived for more that fifty years. About nine years ago they moved to California. Mr. Huntoon died two years ago. Mrs. Huntoon was staying with Mrs. Shuman's family at Bloomington, Cal., during her abscence, and as far as her daughter has been able to learn as yet, was ill only two or three days. Besides Mrs. Shuman, five children survive Mrs. Huntoon--G.W. Huntoon of Ravenswood, and four residing in California.
