Published in the Mobridge (SD) Tribune on Nov. 3, 1999, page 10B.
"Oscar spent 34 years on Milwaukee RR"
Oscar B. Ochsner made a career of railroading and when he retired from it in 1976 he had worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for 34 years, working his way up through many different positions before becoming an engineer.
While working for the railroad, he also farmed and had a custom combining business. From 1952 to 1956, Oscar and his wife Mildred "Mid" owned and operated the Wheel Inn Cafe and the Gadget Cafe on East Grand Crossing in Mobridge.
Called "a good guy" by those who knew him, Oscar hadn't seemed well lately with a declining appetite but he didn't complain. He died quietly in his sleep on Friday, Oct. 29, 1999 at his home in Mobridge. He was 81.
Oscar was born Nov. 20, 1917, on a farm near Zeeland, ND to Gustave "Gus" and Lydia (Groff) Ochsner. His early childhood was spent growing up in the Isabel and Glenham areas where he received his education.
After his schooling, he worked as a handyman for A. H. Brown and for the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
On April 17, 1939, Oscar and Mildred Thompson were married in Timber Lake. They made their home on a farm two miles east of Mobridge where they farmed and raised livestock. He began working for the Milwaukee Railroad in 1942.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
He leaves one son, Dennis Ochsner and wife Sharyl of Beresford; two daughters Sheila Dame and husband Addison, and Jean Roebuck and husband Milton, all of Mobridge; a half brother, Devine Ochsner of Fargo, ND; one sister, Florence Fischer of Mason City, IA; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge and burial was in the Mobridge City Cemetery.
Casketbearers were Terry Dame, Wade Dame, Joe Dame, Arnie Roebuck, John Roebuck, Glenn Roebuck, Beri Swanson, Bernie Swanson and Clayton Bickel.

Funeral Services Held Here Saturday - For William Kunz
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church for William Kunz, 78, pioneer area resident who died at his home here Wednesday afternoon following an illness of about five months.
The Rev. Gordon A. Selbo officiated and burial was made in the Java cemetery.
Kunz was born December 28, 1878, at Yankton, SD. When he was a small boy he, his sister and his widowed mother sold their home in Yankton and together with five families traveled by wagon and ox team to Sutley, SD. They were able to follow wagon trails as far as Aberdeen, then a village made up of a depot and two stores, but from the Hub City west they broke their own trail.
Kunz used to recall the hardships suffered by the pioneers and of the blizzards in those early years. Crop failures, shortages of food and fuel and other hardships were common to these early settlers.
November 10, 1901, he married Katharina Hirning at Sutley where they lived until 1910.
He and his family moved to Java in 1910 where Kunz operated the Java Equity Exchange for 32 years. While living in Java he served as mayor for two years, served on the city council and school board and was active in community and church affairs.
In 1945 he retired and he and his wife moved to Mobridge, SD where they have made their home since that time. November 10, 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Kunz observed their golden wedding anniversary at an open house given by their children at the home of their daughter, Mrs. A. W. Spiry.
Survivors are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. A. W. (Erna) Spiry, and Mrs. H. T. (Nettie) Hauck, both of Mobridge, SD; four sons, Edward of Watertown, SD, Wilfred of Bismarck, ND, Ervin of Aberdeen, SD, and Howard of Hopkins, MN. He is survived by 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Carl Koenig of Carson, ND.
One child and one grandchild preceded him in death.
Kunz was a member of Trinity Lutheran church of Mobridge.
Miles Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frederick Kunz married Christina Oswald in Russia before 1875. He is buried in the Yankton, South Dakota area.
Notes taken from the files of John H. Kunz
I tried to find Frederick and Christina Kunz in the 1880 Federal Census at Yankton since they came in 1775 and he died in 1883 and in so doing I noticed the name Fred Koonce and wife Christina and a son about 1 year old. Since William was born in 1878, that information would be correct and the birth dates for Fred and Christina were the same as the ones I had recorded for them. It's no wonder I coudln't find Frederick Kunz with the spelling of his name being Fred Koonce. In another column of the 1880 Census it stated that Fred was paralyzed. This may have been a cause of his early death since he didn't live many years at Yankton after they arrived in 1775. Since William's sister Christina was born in 1882 she would not have been listed in the 1880 Census.
Frederick came to the United States with his wife, Christina, (Oswald) Kunz and settled near Yankton, South Dakota. They arrived in New York in 1875 according to a Passenger List Index, Bellevue, Washington Library. Since they came in 1875, it would have been two years after Jakob and Regina (Kunz) Huber settled at Yankton in 1873. Jakob and Magdalena (Kunz) Ackermann came in 1886 and Johann and Anna Marie (Kunz) Harr came in 1887. The last two mentioned families stayed with the Hubers before they settled in the Sutley, South Dakota and the Eureka, South Dakota areas. The Ackermann family brought Magdalena's mother, Katharina (Wittmar) Kunz, with them in 1886.
I learned that his name was Frederick from William's death certificate at Selby, South Dakota. Frederick passed away in Yankton County, South Dakota but does not seem to be buried in the Yankton Cemetery as they have no record of his burial. He must have died in 1883 as Christina and her two children left Yankton in 1884.
