Burial was in the church cemetery, rural Avon, with military honors. Herbert Buchholz, son of Ferdinand and Caroline (Neu) Buchholz was born March 30, 1920, on a farm north of Avon. He died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall, SD. Herb attended country school south of Tripp through the eighth grade. He married Margaret Engel on May 3, 1940, at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Avon. Herb was drafted into the US Army following his marriage and served during World War II. He was a POW in Germany for six months. Following the war, Herb was a mechanic on the trucks during the building of the dams in Pierre and Pickstown. He worked for International Harvester in Geddes from 1955 to 1956 and then returned to Avon. Herb worked for Pat Crosby's gas company, Consumer and Northern gas companies, and then started Herb's Repair in the 1960s. Herb was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Avon and the Arthur Wissman American Legion Post #150 in Avon. Herb will be remembered for his "tinkering" in his garage and his love of airplanes. He is survived by his children: JoAnn Houska and husband, George, of Wagner; Arnold and Rodney and wife, Julie, all of Tyndall; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Gilbert, of San Jose, CA; sister, Elda Giedd, of Lake Andes; step brother, Clarence Mudder of Yankton; and many nieces and nephews. Herb was preceded in death by his wife on January 28, 1997; parents; stepfather, Ted Mudder; brother, Reinold; stepbrother, Helmuth Mudder; and stepsister, Grace Stock. | 115561 | www.findagrave.com: www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=150202769 A native of North Dakota, our mother, Violet June Scharf (Schwind) was born on June 27, 1926 and passed away at the age of 84 on January 12, 2011 due to a number of health problems. Her parents were Simon Milton Schwind (1892-1954) and Magdalena Dockter (1898 -1938). Mom was the youngest of their five children. Two of her siblings died shortly after being born. Her brother Milton passed away in 1998 and her sister Esther died in 2001. Mother’s family can be traced back to the German state of Bavaria, the country of Yugoslavia, and northern France. She was the granddaughter of Simon Schwind who emigrated to New York and the United States in 1886 from the German colony of Gluckstal, Bessarabia, South Russia. Simon and his wife, Christina Wittmaier, settled on a farm outside the small town of Wishek, North Dakota where mom’s dad was born along with twelve other children. Mom grew up on a working farm, took care of her dad (after grandma died), graduated from high school and worked in the town’s local movie theatre. On November 28, 1948 our mother married our dad, Ervin Scharf in Mandan, North Dakota. They would have us three children: Tom in 1949; Don in 1951 and Sherry in 1955. Their wedding was a double wedding along with mom's brother Milton and his bride Ruth Bettenhausen. Mom and dad moved to San Diego in 1957. Here she began working for San Diego City Schools in several elementary and junior high school cafeterias as a cook. Cooking for people made mom happy. She loved to prepare meals and was never more pleased than when she could entertain a large group and feed them to overflowing. We remember there was always a devoted following of friends and relatives who were glad to be invited to dinner at “Vi’s House”. Mom was also an accomplished seamstress and not only made clothes for us as children, but also for herself and many others. The birth of her only grandchild, Amanda, in 1987 was an occasion for celebration for mom. Her sewing machine seemed to never stop as she made one outfit after another for the new baby. Mom found special comfort and joy with the several dogs and cats that she cared for in her lifetime. This began with her first dog “Johnny” who she talked about often. But, the thing the three of us will remember most is that mom always made us number one in her life. And, yes, there were times as adults we wished she’d stop mothering us so much and leave us alone, but it was her way of caring. Over the years of our childhood, and often under less than perfect circumstances, mom consistently made sure we were well fed, dressed neatly, did our homework, and had a good sense of right and wrong. His family, on his father’s side, can be traced back to the 1600s to the small village of Burgstall in Baden-Wurttemburg near present-day Stuttgart, Germany. He was the last child to survive to adulthood out of seventeen born to George Scharf (1874-1936) and Dorothea Stickel (1875-1962). Several of his siblings died at a young age or were stillborn. Ten children, including Erivin, grew to adulthood. George and Dorothea had immigrated to the United States in 1899 from one of the German Russian colonies near the Black Sea called Wittenberg. They made their way to Kulm, North Dakota were George’s uncle Gottlieb Scharf had already settled. Ervin’s father passed away in 1936 when he was 16 years old. He quit school not long after to work in the Wishek grocery store to help support his widowed mother. It was about this time that he earned the nickname of “Moon” based on a popular comic strip of the time entitled “Moon Mullens.” The name stuck with him for the rest of his life. Following the start of World War II, he was inducted into the army in April of 1943. And, after completing basic training at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, Ervin was sent to the European Theater of Operations in November of 1943 as a Private First Class. Participation in the Normandy Campaign and the Northern France Campaign earned Ervin the American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, European Theater Ribbon with Two Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He was wounded in action on March 12, 1945 in Reims, France, which later resulted in his discharge from service in November of that year. He later recalled the many places he saw including Paris and a performance at the Paris Opera House with his army buddy. Overall, however the war left him, like many other soldiers, with negative memories that led to bouts of depression throughout much of his later life. After returning to Wishek he would begin dating Violet Schwind who he married in 1948. Three children resulted from this marriage: Thomas (1949), Donald (1951) and Sherry (1955). He also took a position with Montana-Dakota Utility Company and later moved with his family from Wishek to nearby Napoleon, North Dakota. In 1957 the family moved again to San Diego, California where Ervin took a job with National Steel and Ship Building and later with the U.S. Post Office. At times his depression got worse along with other illness as a result of the war injury that left him with several pieces of bullet fragments still inside his body. His death at age 54 came much too soon. Ervin enjoyed his family’s return vacation trips to Wishek, Napoleon and Moorhead, Minnesota throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Wells, age 72, a loving father, grandpa, partner and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 3, 2015 in Albuquerque, NM surrounded by his beloved family. Bob was born on October 12, 1942 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Emil Jack Wells and Mary Ziarnik Wells. After graduating from Lincoln High School, Bob majored as a machinist at Manitowoc Vocational Tech and went to work at Great Lakes Tooling. Early in his career, he was an Assistant Manager in the sporting goods department for Shopko in Green Bay, WI and worked for Paragon Electric in Two Rivers, WI for many years as a Tool & Die Maker, later becoming Paragon Union President. Bob served the community as a police officer for the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department and also owned and operated a sporting goods store in Manitowoc. In 1984, Bob moved to New Mexico where he was General Manager at Miniature Machine Company. Bob later owned and operated a sporting goods store and worked as a security officer. Bob was a master gunsmith, leathersmith, antique gun restorer, firearms expert and craftsman. Bob had a high work ethic, was resourceful, and took pride in his craftsmanship. Bob’s work and expertise in his craft was highly regarded and sought after by his peers. Bob had a passion for adventure and traveling. Starting in his late teens, Bob enjoyed his numerous trips “Out West” and “kicking dirt” looking for old relics. Bob loved the “Old West,” desert, mountains, and the exploration of historical sites. Bob reveled in anything history related. Bob was a knowledgeable and highly intelligent historian throughout his life. Bob’s family and friends all say his knowledge was beyond extraordinary. Bob was tough, adventurous, brave, thoughtful, compassionate, understanding, intelligent, talented, humorous, straightforward and loved his family. His hobbies included studying anything history related, reading, war and western movies, music, old country, bluegrass, Cajun, and gospel, family history/genealogy, gun shows and the outdoors. Bob was a member of the New Mexico Gun Collectors Association. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Emil Jack Wells and Mary Ziarnik Wells, sister, Patricia Ann Wells and brother, Richard C. Wells. Bob is survived by his beloved daughter, Deanne P. Wells, two cherished grandchildren, Amanda Mathews and her husband, Harley and Michael Laurel, devoted life partner of 33 years, Sue Kasten, dearly loved step-daughter, Amy Shoge and her husband, Richard Shoge and their daughter, Maya. Bob’s family would like to give a special thank you to all of the nurses and doctors at Presbyterian Hospital for their care and love. A celebration of life was held on August 5, 2015 on Sandia Crest in the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, NM. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc, WI at a future date. Bob leaves us with an emptiness that can never be replaced, but his quick witted sense of humor, knowledge and love for his family will keep his memory alive for eternity. Hust, 70, passed away in his home on August 13, 2015, surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Sutton, NE, to Rufus E. and Dorothy L. (Wedeking) Hust on July 19, 1945. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1963 and attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. On May 27, 1967, he was united in marriage to Patricia Marie Dvorak in Lincoln, NE. Two daughters were born of this union: Teresa Jo and Jennifer Lynne. The family moved several times: Grand Island, NE; Marion, IA; DeWitt, IA; and Brainard, NE; before moving back to Sutton in 1983, to raise their children in Jim's hometown. He was actively involved in coaching youth basketball, assisting with -H horse projects and was on the Sutton school board for many years. Jim and Patti moved to Lincoln in 1992, where he became an active member of Cathedral of the Risen Christ parish, serving as Acolyte, Extraordinary Minister, Light of the World Community, and the Knights of Columbus. Jim was an avid golfer, playing on two or thr e leagues most years; a homebrewer for over 20 years; and a lifelong Nebraska Football fan with season tickets beginning in 1963. Jim had a lifelong career as an insurance claims adjuster, retiring in 2012 from Battle Creek Mutual Insurance Company. He also worked part-time for the Nebraska Safety Council for 20 years as a Safety Training Option Program instructor and teen driving instructor. Jim and Patti loved to travel and celebrated retirement with international trips. At home, Jim loved tospend time with his children, grandchildren, family and friends. Survivors include his loving wife, Patti of Lincoln; daughters, Tracy (Jake) McHugh of Lincoln and Jeni (Tabatha) Durfey of Council Bluffs, IA. Grandchildren, Jay Richardson of Lincoln and Creighton Durfey and Callie Durfey of Council Bluffs, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Woodrow and Evelyn Dvorak, sister, Reva Jean Hust Stack, nephews, Bruce and Jerry Moore, brothers-in-law, Bill Stack, Don Moore and Gale Dvorak. Kitzman Elven Jacob Kitzman, 79, of Loveland died January 30, 2004, at McKee Medical Center in Loveland. He was born February 7, 1924, in Cheyenne to Jacob and Christina Schmierer Kitzman. He married Cleta L. Sible, and they later divorced. He was in partnership with a brother farming in the Wiggins area. He later was in partnership with another brother in a concrete business in Longmont. He then was a welder for Continental Trailer Manufacturing in Loveland until his retirement. He lived in Morgan and Weld counties until the 1970's when he moved to Loveland. He enjoyed playing cards and horseshoes, going to garage sales, hunting, traveling to Las Vegas and helping other people. He is survived by two brothers, Theodore E. Kitzman and wife Clara of Wiggins, and Benjamin P. Kitzman and wife Rose O'Conner of Dupont, Colorado; four sisters, Rose Carlton of Dolan Springs, Arizona, Flora Zimbelman of Keenesburg, Juanita M. Cowan of Loveland, and Delaine A. Phillips and husband Luther of Loveland; a sister-in-law Alice Kitzman of Byers; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frieda Thomas, and a brother, Harold H. Kitzman. Cremation has been conducted. Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Born in West Reading on December 23rd, 1941, he was the son of the late Ferdinand Karl “Bud” Goetz and Anne Hall Nicolls Goetz and brother of the late Robin Hiester Najarian. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Bonnie; daughter Elizabeth Scherber; daughter Holly and her husband Bruce Aronow; and son P. Taylor and his wife Pippa Goetz; his grandsons Alexander and Nicholas Aronow and P. Henley and Griffith Goetz; and nephews Frederick, Jacob (deceased), Michael, David and James Najarian. Peter was a proud descendant of both the Muhlenberg and Nicolls families of Pennsylvania and had a lifelong interest in celebrating the heritage and preserving the legacy of both families. He was an alumnus of St. George’s School, Lafayette College and Babson College and later served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Peter was a true gentleman who adored his family and their many dogs. He was also a deeply loyal and caring friend. An accomplished racecar driver, Peter went on to be a professional corporate pilot and airline flight safety instructor. He loved Fox Meadow Farm and the outdoors. He was an avid fly fisherman and upland bird hunter with a keen interest in land preservation. Peter was one of a kind. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 22nd at 11am at Christ Episcopal Church, 5th and Court Streets, Reading. A private burial will be held at Charles Evans Cemetery.
