Obit: Kent News-Journal, March 19, 1912, p-1 "Auto Injuries Are Fatal To Marie Hempel Services for Mrs. Marie Hempel of Seattle, former resident of the Meridian district east of kent, who was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Seattle Wednesday night, were conducted, saturday aftrenoon at three o'clock, in the chapel of the Kent Funeral Home with Elder C. A. Seriver of Seattle, officiating. Mrs. Hempel was injured when an automobile driven by her son, Melvin N. Hempel, collided on a Seattle street with a pickup truck driven by Leonard M. Langen of Kenmore. She was taken to Harborview County Hospital for treatment but succumbed a few hours later early Thursday morning. Melvin Hempel was treated at the same hospital for minor injuries. Mrs. Hempel was widely-known in the Kent community, having lived in the Meridian district for 22 years before moving to Seattle in 1909 where she had since made her home. She lived at 1512 15th Ave. S.W. Sixty-four years of age, Mrs. Hempel was born in Germany on September 26, 1877. She had lived in the United States 45 years. She was born at her home south of New Leipzig, on July 19, 1919, to Christian and Sophia (Trautman) Bader. She received her schooling at a rural school south of New Leipzig. On Nov. 22, 1938, she was united in marriage to Albert Hirning at the Neuberg Church near Burt. After their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Mott and in 1943, they moved to a farm southeast of Bentley. In 1959 they moved in to Mott. Sophia was employed at the Mott Public School as a cook for many years. Albert passed away in March of 1986. In 2007, Sophia moved to Fergus Falls, Minn., where she was a resident of the Sheridan House. Sophia is survived by her daughter, Arliss Lentini, Owasso, Okla.; and her son, Harvey (Joyce) Hirning, Ashby, Minn.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Lorina Schantz, Glen Ulin; and a brother, Walter Bader, Tacoma, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Adolf (A.J.), Ervin and Herbert; and two sisters, Ada Roseberry and Emma Friez. Services are planned for Sophia in Mott. They are William Hoeppner, Mrs. Herbert Ritzman, Mrs. Alice Quaschnick, and Mrs. Elaine Wilburn, all of Lodi; and Mrs. Verona Schmeidt of La Crescenda, Calif. His mother, Mrs. Anna Hoeppner of Romana, Kans. also survives. The deceased was the brother of Charles Hoeppner of Lodi; Raymond Hoeppner, Hood River, Ore.; Herman Hoeppner of Texas; Mrs. Oscar Wagner, Portland, Ore.; and Mrs. August Schneider and Mrs. Ella Schneider, both of Romona. A memorial service was held at Scenic Park Bible Church. A potluck followed. Mrs. Horning was born April 18, 1946, in Pasadena, Calif., and moved with her family to Anchorage in fall 1948. She graduated from West Anchorage High School in 1964, and Alaska Methodist University in 1968 where she earned a degree in elementary education. In the mid 1970s, she taught kindergarten and first grade at Eagle River Christian Academy, a ministry of Church in the Wildwood in Eagle River. Her family wrote: ''She was a devoted wife and mother who home-schooled her two sons through their junior and senior years of high school. ''For over 30 years Mary had a business in her home selling Shaklee products and as a result was well known by many people throughout the community. ''She had a great love for children and was involved in children's ministries at Chapel by the Sea, Church in the Wildwood and Faith Bible Fellowship. Before she was incapacitated by her illness, she served as the children's church director at Scenic Park Bible Church in Anchorage. ''As a pastor's wife for 32 years, Mary was actively involved in many aspects of church life. Because of her caring heart and listening ear, many people sought her out for counsel. Her strong faith and commitment to Jesus Christ served as a great source of comfort and strength to her family and friends.'' Janssen, 97, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at the Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, Nebraska. The funeral service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church (12.5 miles North) with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, with military honors by The American Legion, Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Elmer Henry Janssen was born January 2, 1916, in Platte Center, Nebraska, to Bernhard and Emma (Gehring) Janssen. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Platte Center and attended Grand Prairie District 28 School. On January 31, 1942, Elmer entered the United States Army during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged on September 23, 1945. On November 18, 1945, Elmer was united in marriage to Elna Siefken at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Altona, Nebraska. The couple farmed southwest of Creston, Nebraska, until 1981 when he retired and moved to Columbus. Elmer enjoyed horseshoes, softball, bowling, and gardening. He was a member of the American Legion Hartman Post 84 and the VFW Post 3704. Elmer was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he had served on the School Board and the Board of Trustee's.
