Dennis D. Berger, 63, Mandan, died unexpectedly on Jan. 30, 2012. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Chad Gion celebrating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Dennis was born May 22, 1948, in Mandan, to Jack and Alma (Wetzel) Berger. Raised and educated in Mandan, he graduated from Mandan High School in 1966. On March 16, 1972, he married Elaine Hopfauf at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mandan. Very social and outgoing, Dennis was the owner and operator of the Buckhorn Bar on Mandan's Main Street for 30 years. He was well liked for his cheerful attitude and always being a shoulder to lean on. Getting out of the bar business in 1995, he worked at Unisys for 12 years and had recently retired.
He enjoyed fishing and sports, especially baseball, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. His kids and grandchildren meant the world to him. With his great sense of humor and charismatic smile, Dennis was a wonderful story teller. He was a member of Spirit of Life Catholic Church and the Mandan Elks and Moose lodges. Known to many as a friend, Dennis leaves a legacy of love and laughter. To his family who knew him best, Dennis was so much more than a husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. His smile and the twinkle in his eye will never be forgotten.
Blessed to have shared his life is his wife of nearly 40 years, Elaine Berger, Mandan; two sons and their families, Chad Berger (Megan Thompson) and son, Joshua, and Jayme (Kirsten) Berger and their children, Davis and Morgan, all of Denver; his mother, Alma Berger, Mandan; his brother, James (Jeannie) Berger, Mandan; one stepsister, Rosemary Donahue, Vancouver, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, Loretta Muth, Floyd (Marcy) Hopfauf, Bernie (Trisha) Hopfauf and Francis "Hoopy" (Donna) Hopfauf.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Jack Berger; one brother, Rodney Berger; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Ann Hopfauf; and one brother-in-law, Richard Muth.
