Catharina Anna Philippina Kaftan was born in the Belowesche Colony, Tschernigov, Russia in 1822. The exact date is, at present, unknown. She died between 1880 and 1883 in Hutchinson County, South Dakota.
She married Philipp Heinrich Reiswig on November 13, 1839 in Kaltschinowka, Grunau, Jekaterinoslov, Russia. We have records that Catharina and Philipp had eleven children. Only five are known to have immigrated to America. They were Conrad Johann Reiswig, Katherina Maria (Reiswig) Delk, Henry Johann Reiswig, Maria Elizabeth (Reiswig) Werner, and Philip Johann Reiswig.
Catharina immigrated from Russia to the United States on the ship Suevia. She arrived in the port of New York on May 25, 1876 with her husband, four children, her eldest son, Conrad, and his wife and family of five children, and Heinrich Bechthold, his wife, seven children, and his mother. From New York City, all three families, traveled to the Wittenbery North Township, Hutchinson County, South Dakota.
Catharina was enumerated in the 1880 US Census. She was not in the 1885 South Dakota Census. We have a record that Philipp left to go back to Russia on October 15, 1883 and didn't return for two years. We a fairly certain he wouldn't have gone back to Russia if his wife were still living. This is why we believe that Catharina died between 1880 and 1883.
Even if she died before the church was built, Philip would have buried her on his homestead on the banks of the James River. It is a very pretty place, but not suitable for farming. For the same reason, it is the likely place that the Reiswig Seventh-day Adventist Church was built.

Philipp Heinrich Reiswig was born on March 1, 1815 in the Belowesch Colony, Tscheringov, Russia. He died after 1888, in Russia, on a lay missionary trip. We have no record of who his father and mother were. Reiswig was spelled Reusswig in Russia, and in Germany where the Reusswig family was originally from. Enticed by Katherine the Great's offer of free land, the Reusswig family left Germany, for Russia, in 1776. Unfortunately, no Russian birth, death, or marriage records have been found, for the family, until about 1807.
Philipp married Catharina Anna Philippina Kaftan on November 13, 1839 in Kaltschinowka, Grunau, Jekaterinoslov, Russia. We have records that Catharina and Philipp had eleven children. Only five are known to have immigrated to America. They were Conrad Johann Reiswig, Katherina Maria (Reiswig) Delk, Henry Johann Reiswig, Maria Elizabeth (Reiswig) Werner, and Phillip Johann Reiswig.
Philipp immigrated from Russia to the United States on the ship Suevia. He arrived in the port of New York on May 25, 1876 with his wife, four children, his eldest son, Conrad, and Conrad's wife and Conrad's family of five children, and Heinrich Bechthold, his wife, seven children, and his mother. From New York City, all three families, traveled to the Wittenberg North Township (then know as the Milltown West? Township), Hutchinson County, South Dakota and settled there.
When the Reiswig Seventh-day Adventist Church was formed on April 9, 1882, Philipp donated land for a church building. It is recorded that this Church was on Philipp's property on the banks of the James River.
On October 15, 1883, Philipp left New York for Russia. He traveled there as a lay minister for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He is known to have told families, in Russia, that they should immigrate to the United States. Any number of families, from Russia, immigrated to Hutchinson County, South Dakota and became members of the Reiswig Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Philipp stayed in Russia for two years before he returned to South Dakota. He left for Russia a second time in April of 1888. This time Philipp died in Russia, in an unknown location, and on an unknown date.

Anna Marie (Seib) Orth Reiswig Bechthold was born in the Rhineland, Germany in about 1821.
She immigrated with her father and mother to Russia, from Germany, in about 1823.
She married Johannes Orth on November 19, 1840 in Grunau, Jekaterinslov, Russia. We believe they had five children. Johannes died, in Russia, some time before 1856.
Anna Maria then married Jacob Reiswig on Septermber 18, 1856 in the Grunau Parish, Mariupol District, Russia. Jabob and Anna Maria had two children, Jacob and Maria Anna. Jacob died on January 30, 1860 in Belowesch, Grunau, Mariupol District, Russia.
In about 1870, in Russia, Anna Maria married the widower Michael Johann Bechthold. On November 3, 1875 they arrived on the ship Pommerania, from Hamburg. From New York they traveled to Hutchinson County, South Dakota and homesteaded, across the James River from the Reiswig's, in the Clayton South Township of Hutchison County, South Dakota.
Anna Marie (Seib) Orth Reiswig Bechthold died before 1900, in, we assume, Hutchinson County, South Dakota. If this is where she died, we believe that she would have been buried in the Reiswig Seventh-day Adventist Cemetery.
Seib, Anna Maria (I201856)
