Mrs Ellen Nelson, widow of the late Mrs Ewan Nelson, who died in July 1934, was born in Sköglösa Parish, Kristianstad lan (Province) Sweden, June 4, 1848, where she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She was married to Swan Nelson at Ashland, Nebraska, December 24, 1873. Soon after they moved to Clay County and settle on a homestead northeast of Ong. She has consequently been a pioneer mother in this part of Nebraska experiencing the development from a dugout and a sod house to a modern frame structure on their homestead. Even under these conditions Mr and Mrs Nelson had the unusual privilege to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in 1933 in the midst of their children and grandchildren. To this union were born nine children, three having preceded both father and mother in death.
For many years the Nelson's were member of the Stockholm Lutheran church near Shickley, but in 1922 they transferred their membership to the Gethsemane Lutheran church at Ong, where the departed remained a faithful member until death. She loved her church, prayed much for the church and was a faithful Christian believer in Jesus Christ as her only hope for life and eternity. As long as she was physically able Mrs Nelson was a faithful worshiper in the House of the Lord. Altho Mrs Nelson had been bedfast the last six months, the end came suddenly and unexpectedly, nevertheless. She died at the home of a daughter, Mrs Henry Swanson, early in the morning, March 27th, at the ripe old age of 88 years, 9 months and 23 days.
After a brief prayer service at the home, funeral services were conducted at the Gethsemane church, Monday, March 29th, at 2 p.m. with the vice pastor, the Rev A Walfred Anderson, i charge, who spoke on 2 Cor. 5:1-9, a text selected the deceased, with "A Home-Sick Soul" as theme. Lynn and Irma Benson and Mr and Mrs Clinton Peterson sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" at the home and "Face to Face," "Home of the Soul" and "Shall we meet beyond the River" in the church; also, "Nearer My God To Thee" at the grave.
Six grandsons served as pallbearers: Keith Nelson, Clayton and Milbern Pearson, Chester, Reuben, and Melvin Swanson. she leaves to mourn he departure Emmert, Mrs Henry Swanson and Edward of Ong, Mrs Melinda Pearson of Davenport, Albert and Adolph of Ong, twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Interment was in the Stockholm Lutheran cemetery. Peace be to the blessed memory.
