John Weigel was born May 30, 1856, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin and departed this life July 2, 1926, age 70 years, 1 month and 3 days at his home near Guide Rock.
He moved with his parents to Kansas in 1873 where he resided most of his life until less than two years ago when he came to live with his son. He was married April 11, 1881 at Mankato, Kansas to Hanna Sund. To which union five children were born, one son and four daughter, one daughter dying in infancy.
The son, Louis of Guide Rock, Mrs Hoskins of Culbertson, Mrs Josie Norval of Kansas City and Miss Lulu of Guide Rock survive the father.
There also survive two brothers, Conrad Weigel of Troublesome, Colorado and Fred Weigel of Centralia, Washington; one sister, Mrs Matilda Korb of Salem, Oregon. Fifteen grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July Fourth at two o'clock at his late home four miles east of Guide Rock conducted by Rev B F Eberhart of the Methodist Church. The pall bearers were Wm Kiehl, Howard Hunter, Ralph Springer, W M Creps, Glenn Birney and Louis Seebe. Interment was made in the Guide Rock Cemetery.
The relatives can find no words to express their gratitude for the many kindnesses shown them during their deep sorrow.
Although we are publishing the obituary of John Weigel as handed us, we take the liberty to say that the Weigel family lived for many years on the bottom farm one mile south and one and a half east of town. Mr Weigel was an expert maker of sorghum molasses. We have printed can labels for him many times. He was well thought of as a neighbor and citizen.
