      Arthur Harold Sasser of John Day, formerly of Lane County, died Nov. 27 of pneumonia. He was 94. No service is planned.
      He was born May 1, 1916, in Mitchell to Elmer and Nora Reams Sasser. He married Bernice Brandner Creek on Nov. 12, 19148, in Eugene.
      He earned a bachelor's degree. He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for the Oregon Department of Forestry.
      Survivors include two grandchildren. His wife and a stepson, Vern Brandner, died previously.
      Arrangements by Driskill Memorial Chapel in John Day. Remembrances to the Grant County Food Bank or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
      Arthur Harold Sasser, 94, of John Day, died Nov. 27, 2010, at Blue Mountain Hospital.
      Mr. Sasser was born May 1, 1916, in Mitchell, to Elmer and Nora (Reams) Sasser.
      Following graduation from Canyon City High School in 1935, he went on to Oregon State College in Corvallis (now Oregon State University) where he graduated in 1940.
      He joined the U.S. Navy and served as a lieutenant from April 1942 to February 1946. He was a mine sweeper during World War II, an executive officer on his first ship and the commanding officer on his second ship.
      On Nov. 12, 1948, he married Bernice (Creek) Brandner in Eugene. He worked in farm forestry for the Oregon State Forestry Department until he retired in 1980.
      He enjoyed woodworking and his yard. He loved listening to music and learned to play the organ at age 64. He was also a great storyteller, with tales from his life experiences.
      He rode his baby-blue Schwinn Suburban bike over 25,000 miles, which is more than the circumference around the earth's equator.
      He was a member of the Eugene Senior Center, a charter member of the First Baptist Church of John Day, and a member of toastmasters.
      Survivors include his nieces, Sandra (Tom) Sutton of John Day and Janet (Phil) Phelps of Washougal, Wash.; great-nieces, Brenda Sutton of Redmond and Barbara McComb of Fresno, Calif.; great-nephew, Kevin Vernier of Portland; great-great-nieces, Tara Arnett of Salem and Faythe McComb of Fresno; great-great-nephew, Max McComb of Fresno; and stepgrandchildren, Jeanette and Adriana Brandner of Eugene.
      He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Roba, and stepson, Vern Brandner.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Grant County Food Bank or Alzheimer's research through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
