The Bismarck Tribune, ND, Sep. 10, 2007 —
Gustav Sailer, 81, Beulah, died Sept. 8, 2007, at his home surrounded by his family. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday, Sept. 13, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Revs. Kris Nyman and Richard Melchert officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Cemetery, rural Zap.
Gustav was born Aug. 2, 1926, at Burt, the son of Karl and Emma (Hilgemann) Sailer. He was raised and educated in a rural school near his home. He was drafted into the Army in February 1945 and was honorably discharged in December 1946. Gust was stationed in Japan when the war ended and received various medals including the victory medal.
When Gust returned to North Dakota, he learned to be a butcher with Funk's Meat Market in Hebron. After that, he drove truck for a few years, finally settling down in Wishek.
Gust married Lenora Irene Joachim in March 1955 at Eureka, S.D. He then operated the meat department at the Meidinger Grocery Store and later started Sailer Meat Market. Gust closed the meat market in 1970. Lenora passed away in December 1973.
Gust met Ruth Duckwitz in 1980, and they were married May 23, 1981, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Zap. Together they lived in Zap for 23 years, moving to Beulah in 2003. Gust was a janitor at Zap school for many years, retiring when the school closed.
Gust loved to hunt, fish, collect ¼ inch drills, work in the garden and play with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always interested in their activities.
Gust was a member of the Wishek American Legion for over 50 years, on the Wishek and Zap city councils and a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, 2 sons, 6 daughters, 17 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, 1 sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gust was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lenora; a step-grandchild, Jason Hauser; and two brothers, Ben and Fred.
