BIOGRAPHIE: The ship was the SS Estonia, sailing from Libau on 12 April 1910, and arriving in New York 26 April 1910. We find that Michael is reflected as being 29, Katharina 26, Anna 2 1/2 and Adolf 2 months. It can be noted that they are the only ones on the copy of this page held in the family archives, that came from Hoffnungstal. It can also be noted that everyone else on this page came from Russia, but they are the only German Russians. There destination is reflected as being Washburn. It appears that they gave the sponsors name as Michael Vogele in Washburn North Dakota. Both adults are reflected as having black hair and gray eyes, he being 5' 4" and her being 5' 1". It is also reflected that both adults were born in Cherson Russia, and nothing reflected for the two children. Hilda, a daughter, tells that Michael worked in the butcher shop on the ship to defray some of the cost of their passage.
They settled south of Mercer North Dakota. Mike supported
his family by doing carpentry work and farm work for neighbors. Their first house was a sod home. Two more children were born here, and then in 1914 they moved north of Turtle Lake, and then in 1916 they moved on into town.
