Newton Howard Wagner, better known as Newt, was born on a farm by the James River Bridge on the LaMoure County line, to Ted and Mildred (Cox) Wagner on August 11th, 1929. When he was six years old his family moved to one of the Glover farms and in 1943 they moved again to a farm in the southeast corner of Wright Township. He was the second oldest of nine siblings and lived at this farm the rest of his farming days.
He attended School No. 2 of James River Valley School District in Dickey County. For two years in a row he was awarded a certificate for being "neither absent nor tardy". Newt attended confirmation and was a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, in the valley.
In his younger years he loved to bowl and was on the Fullerton Bowling team. A farmer through and through he worked beside his father and brothers for many years. There was dirt under his fingernails and broad shoulders to prove it. Raising livestock and working the land was his love. His joy…was opening his heart to his many nieces and nephews; they all have fond memories of time spent on the farm with Newton.
In January of 2013 Newton moved into the Oakes Good Samaritan Center because of health reasons and passed away there on October 11th reaching the age of 84 years and 2 months. This hard working Christian man will be sadly missed by sisters, Lora Tischer, Alice Raatz and Virginia (Floyd) Schimitz; brothers, Daniel (Delores), David, and Roger Wagner; sister-in-law, Orla Wagner; brother-in-law, Harold Gemar, and 26 nieces, nephews and their families.
Newton was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Virgil and Donald Wagner, a sister; Carolyn Gemar, nephews; Arlen Wagner, Dann Tischer, and Jayme Gemar, great nephew; Micah Wagner, and brother-in-laws; Norman Tischer and Marvin Raatz.
His funeral will be held at Zoar Lutheran Church, LaMoure, ND on Monday, October 14, 2013 starting at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Ansgar Lutheran Cemetery, rural LaMoure.
