Emma died April 18, 2013 at Ashley Nursing Home.
Emma Eszlinger born July 31, 1924 in her parent’s home at Danzig, ND was the 13th child of Salomon and Karolina (Salzer) Eszlinger. She attended grades one through eight at Danzig Country School. She was confirmed in rural Salem Evangelical Church in July of 1938, by Rev. F.C. Knuth, which was located one mile north of the Eszlinger home.
She was united in marriage to Herbert Speidel on June 5, 1947 at the parsonage of Rev. Carl Bach. They made their home on a farm north of Ashley for 18 years. They had two sons; Bruce born July 4, 1947 and Mark on May 8, 1949. In 1965, they sold the farm and moved to Ashley. Being a carpenter’s wife, Emma had the luxury of living in three new homes. She also worked for her niece, Dorene Rueb, at Ashley Super Valu for several years, and as cook at Ashley Lanes lunch counter before retiring.
Following retirement Emma babysat and influenced the lives of several families in the Ashley community, some children were Derrick and Jackie Nitschke; Joel, Jenny and Jamie Fischer; Daniel and Nathan Hammarsten; Amanda and Christopher Meyer; Samantha Schlepp; Erich Schock; Jeff Rerick; Hilary and Grant Mehrer; Lindsay Schock; Jessica, Brent and Josh Ulmer; Bethany Ruff; Jason Arp; Melissa Sayler; Mark, Matthew and Rebecca Heil; Erin, Cally and Cole Musland; plus several others.
Emma was proud of her German from Russia heritage. She loved to get together with family. She enjoyed writing in her daily journal from childhood to the present and loved to write letters to relatives. She enjoyed scrapbooking long before pinterest, facebook, twitter, and even before scrapbooking. Emma loved to teach children card games, board games and puzzles. She was always ready to teach and be competitive at the same time, but loved to giggle at people who made fools of themselves while playing games.
Emma was an excellent cook and always tried new recipes, making sure at all get togethers, every one had plenty to eat and more with care packages for leftovers. In later years as health allowed, Emma loved to travel to various places, especially trips to Iowa, Cheyenne, WY (mountains of Colorado), Twins baseball, graduations in Grand Forks, Dickinson and Medora, ND and always lunch at The Millstone with Sandy, on shopping trips to Aberdeen, SD.
She was a life time fan of McCoy Ministries, blessed and prayed with Rev. Salem of Christian Worship Hour at her recent stay at Sanford Hospital in Aberdeen and was a life time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley.
Emma is survived by two sons; Bruce (Wanda) Speidel of Ashley and Mark (Beth McMurry) Speidel of Spencer, IA; five grandchildren, Jason (Melissa) Speidel of Spencer, IA, Leslye (James) Thiery of Grand Forks, ND, Chad (Tracy) Speidel of Aberdeen, Robyn (Scott) Sulhan of Canton, Mich. and Gwendy (Shawn) Just of Cheyenne, WY; 14 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Alexis, Mckenzie and Madison Thiery of Grand Forks, Tyler (Amber) Speidel of Somerset, KY, Kyle Weber and Taylor Speidel of Aberdeen, Tanner Speidel of Rapid City, SD, Jacob, Olivia, Sophia and Sam Just of Cheyenne, WY and Spencer and Sydney Sulhan of Canton, Mich. and two great-great-grandchildren, Colton and Cyrus Speidel of Somerset, KY.
