WAYNESBORO — Roy David Welsh Bowersox, 92, of Waynesboro died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Avante of Waynesboro. Roy was born Dec. 18, 1919, the son of Roy Clifton and Margie Viola Black Bowersox.
He was united in marriage to Doris A. Hunter, Westminister, Md., on May 24, 1941. Doris was called home March 29, 2003.
Surviving are his sons and their wives and children, Roy David Wayne and Laura Bowsersox and daughter, Summer, Richard Donald Warren and Shirley Bowersox and sons, Rodney and Rennie, Roger James and Brenda Bowersox and daughter, Heather, and sons, John David and James, and Mark Hewitt, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Roy was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Anna Ruth Bittinger, Clifton Sterling Bowersox, Mary Zendgraft, John Wesley Bowersox, Margin Pauline Sepp and William Ben Bowersox.
Roy groomed horses for Carrlton Hounds prior to being hired in 1942 by Hopeman Brothers as a ship joiner at Sparrow Point, Maryland Shipyard. He was promoted to a top leadership position and was transferred to Waynesboro in 1955 to work as a supervisor at Wayne Manufacturing Co., retiring after 42 ½ years of service.
In 1956, he joined Second Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro. This was the beginning of a new life in God's work for him. There he served as president of the men's class, president of men's work in the Lexington Presbytery and president of men's work in the Shenandoah Presbytery. In 1958, he joined Dooms Ruritan Club, holding the office of Zone 5 governor four times, district lieutenant governor in 1987 and Woodrow Wilson District governor in 1988. He chaired the rural division of the Waynesboro-East Augusta United Community Fund 1962-64 and served on the boards of the United Community Fund and United Way. He was a member of the Gideons and for a number of years managed the News-Virginian Farm League baseball team.
A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at Second Presbyterian Church by Pastor John Hamric. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at McDow Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and family attending the service. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ruritan club and Second Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Ruritan National, Dooms/Waynesboro Ruritan Club, Second Presbyterian Church or Waynesboro First Aid Crew.
