The Bismarck Tribune June 23, 2015
Hilmer Daniel Zimbelman, 97, Clarissa, Minn., died June 19, 2015, with his family at his side. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at the Baptist Health Care Center Chapel, Bismarck. Burial will be at McClusky Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home.
Hilmer was born near Anamoose, the third of 10 children, to Carl and Katie Zimbelman. He grew up in Anamoose and later Denhoff.
Following the beginning of World War II, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After training as a medical technician, he served in Hawaii, the Philippine Islands and New Guinea. He was awarded the Bronze Star for demonstrating bravery under enemy fire, as well as the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
On March 21, 1946, he married the love of his life, Laura Wahl, in McClusky. They were able to enjoy 60 years together, until Laura died in 2007. They were blessed with two sons and a daughter, and also raised two nieces and a nephew as part of the family.
Following his discharge from the Army in 1945, he farmed for several years near McClusky. In 1955, he moved to McClusky and he became the county treasurer of Sheridan County. In 1966, he was appointed to the office of county judge, register of deeds and clerk of the district court, the office to which he was continually elected until 1982.
Following retirement, they resided in Bloomingdale, Ill., then Sauk Centre, Minn., then Bismarck. Most recently, he lived in Grand Rapids and Clarissa, Minn.
Hilmer was always community minded. In McClusky, he was involved in Community Betterment, American Legion, where he served as chaplain, and Lions Club. He was an active volunteer, helping neighbors, delivering Meals on Wheels. While in Bismarck, he was named Volunteer of the Year at the Baptist Home. When he was not busy as a volunteer, he enjoyed fishing, golf and watching Twins baseball.
Hilmer knew and loved his Lord. He trusted Jesus Christ as a young man. He demonstrated his faith in the way he lived his life until the very end. He was active in the church wherever he lived, and over many years served in a variety of capacities including Sunday school superintendent and deacon. He was involved in the beginning years of Crystal Springs Baptist Camp.
He leaves to mourn his passing his children, Clyde and Barbara Zimbelman, San Antonio, Texas, Clare and Robert Freeman, Clarissa, Minn., and Daniel and Lisa Zimbelman, Oxford, Md.; six grandchildren, Paula (James) Chapman, Gabrielle (Brian) Hastings, Jonathan Gerthe, Matthew Zimbelman, Cathy Zimbelman and Miriam (Dean) Darnell; two great-grandchildren, Destiny and Deana Darnell; special nephew and nieces, Kevin Wahl, Marjean Sease and Carol Barrett; two brothers, Waldemar Zimbelman and Ernest Zimbelman; two sisters, Adeline Kopf and Vera Wahl; and two step-grandsons, Robert III and Daiv Freeman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laura; and his brothers, Paul, Herbert, Orville, Carl and Robert.
