George Showalter Keener, 69, of 1426 Oakwood Court, Chambersburg, Pa., passed away at 5:40 A.M. Friday, January 16, 2009 in Menno Haven. Born February 24, 1939 in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was a son of the late George M. and Esther Showalter Keener. He was a self-employed dairy farmer for many years, operating Keen-R-Lea Farms, near Huyetts Crossroads until 1986. Following his retirement from farming, he was employed by Martins Truck in Hagerstown for several years.
He was a member of Salem Ridge Mennonite Church, near Greencastle, Pa., where he served in various capacities. He was a member of the Mennonite Historical Association, served on the board of Shalom Christian Academy and was amateur radio operator (K31WU). He attended the parkinson's support group in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary (Martin) Keener whom he married December 12, 1960; five children, Darwin H. Keener, Lancaster, Pa., Diane Lehman (and husband Dale) of Chambersburg, Pa., Denise Heir (and husband Bryan), Quarryville, Pa., G. David Keener (and wife Joylynn) of East Petersburg, FL and Dorinda Henesy (and husband Greg) of Hagerstown and thirteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Keener, and one grandchild.
