He was born on May 26, 1920, and he was one of eight children born to Albert and Emma (Korb) Fuhrer at Isabel, S.D. He grew up on the farm near Isabel and attended school at Isabel. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, serving until he was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Tech 5. On June 26, 1949, Gilbert married Elaine Miller at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Firesteel. They were blessed with three children, Twila, Sheryl and Mark. Upon his return from the Army, in 1946, Gilbert became employed at Kesling Hardware and Lumber, in Isabel doing carpenter work, plumbing and helping at the store. In 1960, he moved to Mobridge and continued his trade of carpentry and plumbing. Gilbert also enjoyed doing a lot of wood working and kept very busy making lawn ornaments. He was known to be able to fix anything that needed fixing. Gilbert was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge for many years. He enjoyed serving as an usher until his health started to fail. His biggest delight was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they grew and showed him how much they really loved him. Gilbert moved into the Mobridge Golden Living Center in March of 2005 where he was quite happy. His greatest enjoyment there was the music and entertainment they had. Gilbert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine, of Mobridge; daughter Sheryl (Kenny "Fox") Keller, of Mobridge, son, Mark (Wanda) Fuhrer, of Mobridge, son-in-law, John Swanson, of Slayton, Minn.; five grandchildren, Stacey (Kelly) Eisemann, of Mobridge, Danika (Jason) Brick, of Aberdeen, Landon Swanson, of Sioux Falls, Carli Fuhrer, of Mobridge and Brady Fuhrer, of Mobridge; four great-grandchildren, Miranda and Madison Eisemann and Michael and Hunter Brick; two sisters, Martha (Richard) Waddell, of Isabel and Dora (Larry) Christianson, of Gillette, Wyo.; three brothers, Floyd Fuhrer, of Mobridge, Raymond (Lucille) Fuhrer, of Mobridge and Frank (Carol) Fuhrer, of Isabel and numerous nieces and nephews. Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Christine Fuhrer, his oldest daughter, Twila, in 1990 of cancer, sister, Helen Bertsch and brother, Leonard Fuhrer
