BROECKEL, Oscar (Age 93) Lifetime Dusty area resident, passed away on Sunday, June 26 at The Courtyard in Colfax. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 1 at the Country Bible Church in Dusty. Burial will follow at the Dusty Cemetery. Friends may call and pay their respects at Bruning Funeral Home on Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. both days.
Oscar was born on July 25, 1922 in Dusty to William & Amalia (Hetterle) Broeckel. He grew up in Dusty and graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1940. He was a farmer his entire life and enjoyed every moment of it. He worked for Oscar & Bethel Steiger for a number of years as well as at the Dusty Co-Op before starting out on his own. True to most farmers, Oscar continued to farm until he was 88, and kept close tabs on how his son Brian was tending to things after that.
He met K. Pauline Skinner and the couple married on February 13, 1960, a date chosen because it was "before spring work but after taxes" he always told his kids. Pauline passed away on April 9, 1993.
Oscar was one of the original members of the "Gentlemen on Horseback" Club, starting in 1948 and he was able to go down and visit the riders in Hay this spring. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, the Mockonema Cutting Club, Dusty Gun Club and, although not an official member, was often asked to help out with the Whitman County Sheriff's Posse. He enjoyed spending time at the Palouse Empire Fair parking cars and was instrumental in helping to start the Plowing Bee. He and Pauline never missed a Pendleton Roundup - it was their annual vacation. Oscar also had the privilege of attending the Rose Bowl both in 1948 and then again 50 years later in 1998. He was a lifetime member of the St. John Congregational Church which later became the Country Bible Church.
Oscar is survived by his children Doreen (Tom) Riedner of Colfax, Denise (Tony) Kendall of Tacoma and Brian (Angela) Broeckel of Dusty; grandchildren Alex, Sami and Graham BeDell and his brother Randall Broeckel of Vancouver.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, his parents, and six siblings.
Memorial contributions in Oscar's honor are suggested to the Dusty Cemetery or to Homestead Ministries. BRUNING FUNERAL HOME of Colfax has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.bruningfuneralhome.com
