Marvin D. Schlafman, 69, of Turtle Lake, ND died peacefully on May 6, 2014 at the Community Memorial Hospital, Turtle Lake. Memorial services will held 10:30 AM Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Mercer Community Center in Mercer, ND. Officiating will be Revs. Randy Emgarten and George Schuessler.
Marvin was born November 14, 1944 on a farm near Mercer, the third child of six to Alvin and Martha (Schell) Schlafman. He learned about his Savior and Lord at an early age while attending Sunday School and church at Zion Lutheran Church, south of Mercer. He attended country school and later Mercer Public School.
Marvin married Sue Blaser in Baker, MT. They had two children, Todd and Lisa. As a young man, Marvin worked many jobs around Mercer. He lived in Pickardville, ND for several years and owned and operated Schlafman Excavating. Marvin moved to the family farm in 1979 where he helped his father with farm work on the weekends. He later was employed with Brown & Root Construction and worked at jobsites throughout the United States and Panama. He would often talk about how he would give to the poor children of Panama while he worked there. Marvin was a hard worker and expected his employees and co-workers to give the same effort. He never asked for more that he was willing to do himself. Regardless of where Marvin lived, he was willing to help anyone in need, more often than not expecting nothing in return. He most recently worked construction in the Tioga/Stanley, ND area until his health declined.
He is survived by one son, Todd (Connie) Schlafman of Wilton, ND; one daughter, Lisa (Jamie) Hoynes of Bismarck; his grandchildren, Derrick Wolf, Tanner Schlafman, Megan Schlafman, Breana Hoynes, Mikayla Hoynes, Samantha Wech, & Camryn Hoynes; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Gatlyn, & Graysen Wolf; one brother, Ralph (Delby) Schlafman of Little Rock, AR; three sisters, Delores (Wesley) Helm of McClusky, Marlys (Leslie) Brewster of Mercer, & Marilyn (Leo) Foster of Hazen; many nieces & nephews; and many close friends he made in the construction trade.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, one brother (Gerald), and a grandson (Ryan Wolf).
