Michael L. Wiest:
Death: Venturia, North Dakota
Burial: Kassel Evangelical and Reformed Cemetery/ Wishek, Mclntosh Co., North Dakota (Rural)
Karl Wiest was born June 20, 1880, in South Russia, son of Heinrich Wiest, Sr., and Johanna Wiest, nee Hoffman. He was married June 17, 1899, to Dorothea Boschee, daughter of Valentine Boschee and Barbara Boschee, nee Gehring. To this union the following children were born: John K., Herried, S. Dak.; Ed. K., Wishek, N. Dak.; Theodore H., Venturia, N. Dak., Paulina (Fischer), Ashley, N. Dak.; Reinhold A., Rupert, Idaho; Frieda (Krein), Clair City, S. Dak.; Clara,
Mr Wiest came to this country in 1885 to Menno, SD and the following year to McIntosh, County, ND where he homesteaded, erecting a sod house which was very common in the early years of our pioneers—the sod for the house was plowed with oxen. His nearest town was Ipswich, SD, Ellendale, ND and Eureka, SD. On this vast prairie where the buffalo had roamed by the thousands, naturally their bones were numerous and proved to be valuable in providing a livelihood for the early settlers. The bones were gathered and hauled to town by oxen, where they were traded for groceries, which were not too plentiful. Food conservation is not a new subject. To conserve sugar a table fork was used instead of a spoon. With very crude machinery and oxen for power, farming was accomplished.
In 1889 he helped build the railroad grade into Wishek. In 1899 he helped build one of the first grain elevators to be constructed in Wishek, ND.
In 1925 Mr Wiest was elected County Commissioner from his district and served until 1929—one year as Chairman. During his term of office as county commissioner, he was influential in the construction of the first county highway.
On July 15, 1937, Mr Wiest passed away in Venturia, ND. On August 16, 1944 Mrs. Wiest passed away in Wishek, ND.
