Pioneer Hornick Man Dies at his Home
Funeral services for Henry Jacob Weber, 84, who died Monday at his home in Hornick, Iowa were held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the German City, St. John’s Evangelical Church with Rev. Henry Held of Sioux City and Rev. Lyle Lieder of Hornick officiating. Gerald Beckstrom, George Till, Edgar Shupe and Gary Shull sang “The Hand That Was Wounded for Me’, accompanied by Mrs. Ed Helming. Pallbearers were members of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Frank Washburn, Al Nordstrom, Wid Smith, Jay Jones, Louis Sulsberger and John Butler. Mrs. Frank Becker had charge of the flowers. The Winters funeral home of Sioux City had charge of the arrangements and burial was in the Willow Township Cemetery near Holly Springs, Iowa.
Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brandt of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Rhoades and Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Beckwith of Culbertson, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lange of Bloomfield, Nebraska; Mrs. May Martin, Mrs. Pete Geild, Mrs. Emma Wendall, Mrs. Emma Staudt, Jose Steele and Jim Steele of Sioux City, Iowa.
Henry Weber was born the son of Frederick and Wilhelmina (Steinhoff) Weber, November 26, 1868 at Miltonsburg in Monroe County, Ohio, just three years following the end of the Civil War. At the age of 15 years he moved with his parents to Iowa. They arrived by rail at the Mapleton, Iowa train station on March 1, 1883. The family settled in the German City, Iowa vicinity. He spent his whole life in the German City, Hornick communities. On February 19, 1901 he was united in marriage to Mary Ferguson of Holly Springs, Iowa. A daughter Edna was born to this union. She was their only child.
Henry helped build the first German City Church and was a member of the first confirmation class of that church. He was destined to see this church destroyed by a tornado in 1906. He built (with help) another church, the structure in which his funeral was held.
In the winter of 1897 a German City Band was organized and Henry was a charter member. Later in 1923 and 1924 he was made Band Manager of Hornick Band. His interest in bands and band music has never waned. While he was confined at home, Mr. Israel, Hornick Band instructor took the band to play for him near his home. He enjoyed immensely the music played for him.
Henry Weber joined the Odd Fellows Lodge of Hornick in 1893. In 1950 at a special meeting he was presented the Lodge Emblem of 50 years service, the first to be presented by the Hornick Lodge.
For over 50 years he has been a contractor and builder of many lovely homes in this vicinity.
On February 19, 1951 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weber celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at their home at Hornick, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife Mae; a daughter, Mrs. Edna Brandt of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, John of Hornick, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Anna Rose of Sloan, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
