Esther Knopp, 91, of Las Vegas, Nev., and former Rupert resident, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
Born Sept. 19, 1920, in Hague, N.D., to August and Anna Maria (Wiest) Hieb, she was the third of 11 children. The family moved to Idaho in the early 1940s, where Esther met and married Edward Knopp on April 4, 1943. They lived in Idaho, raised their family and were engaged in the farming business. In 1986, they moved to Las Vegas. Esther was an advocate for mentally challenged children and worked tirelessly, with others, to ensure these children were mainstreamed in public school.
She was a member of the Mini-Cassia Cow Belles, served as president; Rupert Business and Professional Women, served as treasurer; and worked with Special Olympics. A member of Ebenezer Congregational Church and, later, the Burley Presbyterian Church, she was active in several organizations and taught Sunday school in both. In Las Vegas, she was a member of Community Lutheran Church. Esther loved people and will be remembered for her infectious laugh. Known as an excellent cook and seamstress, she enjoyed gardening, music, yoga, playing tennis and dancing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; a son, Randy Knopp; four brothers, Ted, Leonard, Art and Clifford Hieb; and one sister, Dorthea Fetzer. She is survived by three children, CleAnne (Ken) Gilman, Garland and Brian Knopp, all of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Martha (Emil) Reichert of Lodi, Calif., Etta (Joe) Baykara of Las Vegas, Hildegard (Gene) Holy of Rupert, Ella (Bill) Wall of Boise and Betty Guthrie of Las Vegas.
A service was held Saturday, April 7, at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas, with Dr. Mark Wickstrom of Community Lutheran Church officiating.
