Fredrick R.Wiest :
From Olinda Weitzel, Oct.2, 1991; parents, Wilhelm and Katerina Wiest, went to Germany in 1911 in an attempt to immigrate to America. They were in Hamburg and a doctor said Wilhelm had an eye disease so they weren't permitted to leave. They stayed in Hamburg 6 months waiting for permission to leave; finally they returned to Friedrichsfeld wheretheir families lived. In 1914 the war with Germany broke out and her father was in the war in Austria for 3 years (as prisoner of war?). In 1918 he returned home. I don't know the parents of my grandparents (Karl and Elizabeth Wiest), nor when they (the grandparents) died. I only know that often I heard my mother say that they were very good people. ('daß sie sehr gute Menschen waren'). When my father was in the war, my brothers, Friedrich and Emil, were very young and mother says theyalways stayed with Grandmother Wiest (Elizabeth). On 16 June 1993 Christian also sent us much information about hisparents, his brothers and sisters, and his own family. see letter in file.
Debharrvey:
!Date of death (1943) reported by Margaret Dekker in 22 May 1989 letter to W.W. and KE Wiest (my mother and father). He was said to have fallen from a great height and immediately thereafter spoke no more (killed instantly, or in a coma for some time?)
!Albiena Root writes (1989) that Uncle Wilhelm was ill and had poor eyesight in his last years.
!Additional info. gotten from Russian note enclosed with Albiena's letter.
!In 1990 in Kustanai Margaret Dekker told me he was in prison in Austria (in first world war?) for 4 years.
!Margaret told me that the order of the children is Friedrich, Emil, Elsa, Olinda, and Christian. !Also see info in 1991 letter from Olga Ivanovna Kondratenko. !Alma Wolsey (May 11, '92) wrote (information from Olga Kondratenko) re
Friedrick and Emil 'when small those two boys were always visiting grandma Wiest.' !More info about Wilhelm Karlovitch Wiest from Olga Ivanova Kontratenko (letter of 20 July 1991). He was a carpenter before the war; knew he had a brother in the U.S and tried to immigrate with his family, but was turned back at the border because of eye problems. He was sent to Kazakhstan during the war, and died as the result of a fall off a roof during his work. She (Olga) gives names of children in same order as Margaret Dekker does, and provides dates of birth for Emil & Friedrich; also says daughters, Elsa and Olinda were sent to Karaganda during war. !From Olinda Weitzel, Oct.2, 1991; parents, Wilhelm and Katerina Wiest, went to Germany in 1911 in an attempt to immigrate to America.
