Richard Cruise, age 73 years, one of the old settlers of this community, died at his home in Horton Monday evening. It was a sudden death. Mr. Cruise had eaten his supper and as he left the table was stricken and died in a few moments. The remains were brought to Effingham and buried in the Catholic cemetery Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted by Father Fabian saying mass and the sermon was preached by Father Hildebrand, of Horton. Mr. Cruise was born in Ireland and moved to this community in 1861 where he has always made his home until three years ago when he went to California on account of failing health. Mrs. Cruise died in Los Angeles, California, June 22, 1906 and the remains were brought to Effingham for burial. After his return Mr. Cruise purchased property in Horton and has lived there with a daughter ever since. He was the father of 14 children, 13 of whom are living. He was an excellent citizen and was held in the highest esteem by all. A large congregation attended the funeral at St. Ann's church.
