Mrs. Rosena Kautz, 87 of Artas in Campbell County, SD passed away at the Eureka Hospital on Sunday, April 6, 1964. She had been hospitalized for approximately one week. Death was attributed to complications of old age.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, April 9, 1964 at 2 pm from the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Artas, SD with the Rev. Johnnie Walter of Herreid SD officiaitng. Interment followed in the Artas Cemetery in Campbell County, SD with Straubs Funeral Home of Eureka in charge of arrangements.
Rosena was born to Sam Krause and Beatha Heillier in Russia on December 29, 1876. (Rosena at the age of 9 with her parents and her siblings: Beata, Gottlieb, Michael, Juliane, Samuel and Martha, immigrated to America via the Port of Bremen, Germany aboard the SS "Eider" and arrived at the Port of New York, New York on the 30th of January 1886. She came to America in 1880.) She was baptized in Russia in the year 1876 and was confirmed in 1893 by Pastor A. Zimmerman in America. She became a member of the EUB Church in 1901 at Artas.
On January 14, 1897, she was united in marriage to John Kautz Jr. by the Rev. H. Reinkardt in the Hoffnungstal Lutheran Church south of Artas. The couple made their home on a farm 1½ miles southeast of Artas where they resided until 1944 when they retired and moved to Artas, SD.
Survivors include her widower, John Kautz, Jr; four sons, Henry Jr. (Helen Diede) of Ashley ND; Willie (Ella Schweigardt) of Artas; Calvin (Emma Zimmerman) of Edgemont, SD and Ernest (Emma Kauk)of Aberdeen, SD; five daughters, Miss Esther at home; Mrs. Ernestine (Emil Ackerman) of Eureka; Mrs. Lydia (Edwin Zimmerman of Artas; Mrs. Julia (Art Fischer) of Aberdeen, SD and Mrs. Rosie (Albert Berreth) of Artas.
Also surviving are 35 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren and the following sisters: Mrs. Martha Brunnmeier of the Lutheran Home in Eureka and Mrs. Juliana Beiber of the Rest Home in Yankton SD.
Preceding her in death were her parents and four sons.
Pallbearers were Calvin kautz Jr., Lester Berreth, Ervin Marzalf, LaVern Zimmerman, John West and Dennis Kautz.
