1900 census says Dec 1829
In 1850, James S. Lynn led his second wagon train to California. On this train were Hugh, his mother (Nancy King Brown), his sister (Margaret Brown), and his cousins: Mary Ann King, Daniel Moody, and Peter Haun. They arrived in California on October 4, 1850.
The 1910 and 1920 censuses indicate his father was born in Ireland and his mother in Virginia.
California Pioneer (on headstone). Fanny Lynn Moody (Mrs. Bart Moody) helped raise Hugh Brown's children when they were young.
In 1860, Hugh and his wife were living in Fremont with their daughter, Margaret; his mother, Nancy Brown (b. 1797 VA); Elizabeth Mays (b. 1832 KY); and workmen. In 1870, the family had grown and were still living in Fremont, California (Alviso Post Office).
In 1880, Hugh was farming and his daughter, Margaret (22), was keeping house and taking care of Mary (16), Nancy (14), Charlotte (12), and Benjamin (3) in Hollister, San Benito, California.
In April, 1899, Hugh was a pallbearer at Matilda Haun Moody Gardnerâ„¢s funeral. Matilda was his first wifeâ„¢s cousin.
In 1900, he was living in San Francisco with his daughter, Charlotte, and her family, and in 1910 and 1920 he was living in San Jose with his son Benjamin and his family.
In March, 1911, at the quarterly reunion and banquet of the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County, Hugh Brown was the only member elected as a member.According to later articles, he regularly attended meetings throughout the following years.
In December 1919, The San Jose Mercury published an article on Hugh and two other men, all of whom turned 90 and attended the First Christian Church together.
He was nearly 98 years old when he died in 1926.
