Ernest Edward Laye, 81, of Bayer Drive, and formerly of Fort Loudon Road, Mercersburg, Pa., died Saturday, Nov. 16, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 24, 1915, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Leonard and Blanche V. Mills Leigh.
He was a life long carpenter working for various contractors in Franklin County, Pa., and retired from Mercersburg Academy in 1980.
He also was a minister holding tent meetings and establishing several mission churches in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He began teaching the adult Bible class for Sunday school at the age of 16 completing 65 years of teaching. He was a founding member of Emmanuel Chapel in Smithsburg.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Zelda R. Hawbaker Laye; three daughters, Dorcas L. Pine and Naomi B. Hornbaker, both of Mercersburg; Elizabeth C. Litten of Fairplay; one son, Jonathan D. Laye, pastor, of Smithsburg; one brother, Herman R. Leigh of Clear Spring; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Rachel Rebecca Laye; two brothers, Milford L. Leigh and Robert Leigh; and one granddaughter.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Chapel in Smithsburg. The Rev. Glen Hartman and the Rev. Rosalie Addlesberger Wharton will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg.
The family will receive friends at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park St., Mercersburg, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
