Of œCorotoman, Lancaster County, Virginia. Col. Carter came to Virginia from England about 1643.Through his connections and his wealth,he rose quickly to prominence in the colony, and by 1657 he was a member of the council. His five marriages produced only six children, several of whom died in infancy. Most important to Robert was his older half-brother, John, who raised him after their father died in 1669.
