She attended grade school at Riverdale Country School and graduated from Oakes High School. She was united in marriage to Harold Konkler on September 24, 1950 in Oakes. To this union five children were born; Curtis, Jeanne, Steven, Patricia, and Victoria. Marlys and Harold lived on a farm northwest of Oakes, where they ran a dairy farm. Marlys would always put in a large garden besides helping Harold with farming. Harold passed away on June 10, 1974. Marlys and her son, Steven, continued to operate the dairy farm for four years. Marlys was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Ruth Circle. She enjoyed going to quilt with the ladies on Thursday mornings in the church basement. Besides quilting, she liked the fellowship that came along with lunch and coffee. Marlys also loved to embroider and crochet, and she enjoyed making afghans for her grandchildren. She always had cake or cookies made for coffee in the afternoon for family or friends who would drop in. Many birthday anniversaries and holidays were spent together with playing cards as the main event. Everyone enjoyed sitting around the table reminscing about crazy things that happened in the past. In July of 2005, she moved to an apartment in Oakes. In September of 2013, she became a resident of the Oakes Good Samaritan Society, where she passed away peacefully on November 18, 2013 with family by her side. She will be missed dearly by her children, Curtis (Bev) Konkler, Fargo, Jeanne Murphy, Fargo, Steven (Jan) Konkler, Oakes, Patricia (Larry) Olson, Bloomington, MN, and Victoria (Mike Swanson) Konkler, Fargo; five grandchildren, Jason Murphy and Kelly Dakak both of Fargo, Jennifer (Tom) VanHorn, Oakes, Aaron (Jane Long) Konkler, Langford, SD, and Danielle Konkler, Aberdeen, SD; eleven great-grandchildren; and brother, Milton "Bud" (Elaine) Zimbelman, Bismarck. Marlys was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Muriel, her husband, Harold, three brothers, Ivan, Earl, and Alvin, and sister, Evelyn. Her memorial service will be held on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Oakes, ND. Burial will be at the Oakes View Cemetery near Oakes. Friends may greet the family Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a prayer service to follow at 7:30 p.m. at the Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes. In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials given to Grace Lutheran Church in Oakes.
