Harry Kemmerer
Funeral services were conducted Monday for Harry F. Kemmerer, 92, of Thompson Falls at The Community Congregational Church with Pastor Gaylund Olson officiating. Burial followed, with full military rites by John Robb VFW Post, in the Thompson Falls Fraternal Cemetery under the direction of Shrider Funeral Home of Plains. The flag covering the coffin was presented to his wife, Kathryn.
Mr. Kemmerer died of natural causes Thursday, Feb. 18, at his home.
He was born Nov. 5, 1895 at Dorchester, Neb., to Joseph and Anne Kemmerer. He was raised and attended school at Wheeler, Wash. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I and was assigned to Company D, 116th Engineers of the Second Division.
He married Laura Stoller Nov. 9, 1919, at Quincy, Wash. They moved to Jordan and homesteaded there until 1935. Later that year, they moved to the Thompson Falls area, where they farmed until 1941. They then moved into town, where Mr. Kemmerer worked as a janitor at the courthouse. He was a carpenter and built many homes in the Thompson Falls area. During World War II, he was a watchman at the dam during the era when all dams were blacked out in case of attack. He also assisted in the construction of the Noxon Rapids Dam.
All of his Thompson Falls acquaintances knew him as "Mr. Fixit."
His wife died in 1971, after 52 years of marriage.
He married Kathryn Haase Willson Feb. 12, 1974 at Sandpoint, Idaho and they made their home in Thompson Falls. They celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary Feb. 12 at the Clark Fork Valley Nursing Home in Plains, where Mrs. Kemmerer resides.
Mr. Kemmerer had many pastimes including hunting, fishing, gardening and helping others. He played the harmonica, button accordion and jew's-harp at local gatherings.
He was a member of the John Robb Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the Odd Fellows and a charter member of Thompson Falls Grange.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of the Clark Fork Valley Nursing Home at Plains; two sons, Louis, Junction City, Ore. and Frank, Three Forks; three daughters, Fern McDonald, Othello, Wash.; Lorene Church, Beaverton, Ore. and Esther Mund, Salmon, Idaho; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Edwards, and two brothers, Lester and Dewey Kemmerer.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
