      Note:
Fern Elizabeth McDonald, age 80, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away February 9, 2003 at Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. Her dear husband Dewey and her loving family were at her bedside.
Fern Elizabeth Kemmerer, the daughter of Laura and Harry Kemmerer, was born on January 11, 1923 in Neppel, Wash. The second of five children, she spent much of her childhood near Thompson Falls, Mont. She graduated from high school in Thompson Falls and was the valedictorian of her class. She later moved to Spokane, Wash. In November of 1946, she met the love of her life, Dewey McDonald, who was serving in the Army Air CORE stationed at Geiger Field in Spokane. Dewey was later transferred to Cheyenne, Wyo. in June 1947.
Dewey and Fern were married November 1, 1947 in Cheyenne. They had two children while stationed at Fort Frances Worren, Wyo., Marian Kaye (Hanna) and Dewey Jr. Their son, Harry, was born while the family was stationed at Parks Air Force Base in California.
Dewey was shipped overseas to Korea in 1950, where he served for two years. The family was then transferred to Keesler Field in Mississippi in 1953 and then to Bentwaters Air Force Base in England where their son, Wayne, was born in Ipwich, England.
The family settled in Othello, Wash. where Dewey served with the 637th at Othello Air Force Base. They continued to make their home in Othello after Dewey retired from the Air Force in 1966. Fern became employed as a legal secretary and Dewey was employed as a cook with the civil service. In the late 1980s, Fern and Dewey became managers of the local Aladdin Motor Inn. Fern also sold Avon for many years.
Fern and Dewey were always very active in the community life of Othello, including serving for the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Fern as a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary . In retirement, Fern and Dewey enjoyed spending time with their family and traveling in their fifth-wheel.
Fern is survived by: her husband of 55 years, Dewey; her daughter, Marian Kaye Hanna and husband, John of Moses Lake; three sons, Dewey McDonald Jr. and wife, Sallie of Othello; Harry McDonald and wife, Kari of Othello; and Wayne McDonald and wife, Mary of Moses Lake; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, including three sets of great-grand twins; one brother, Louis Kemmerer of Eugene, Ore.; and two sisters, Lorene Gaultier of Beaverton, Ore. and Esther Mund of Salmon, Idaho.
One brother, Frank Kemmerer of Bozeman, Mont. preceded her in death.
Fern recently celebrated her 80th birthday with a big party attended by much of her family. She was a beautiful, soft-spoken lady, a dedicated wife, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Fern's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15 at the Gathering Place, Othello Church of the Nazarene, 825 E. Ash. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Chapel.
