Military Service: Leonard Cedric Payton entered the Marine Corps during the depression of May 1928. He went through all the enlisted ranks, and then he was promoted to Marine Gunner (Warrant Officer) based on his professionalism in combat during the WW II. He was in the following battles during World War II: He was aboard the USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier CV-2 at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He later was forced to abandon ship (USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier) when it was sunk during the battle of the Coral Sea on 8 May 1942 and then he was picked up with another marine on his back (he couldn’t swim) after three days in the Pacific Ocean by the USS Dewey on 11 May 1942. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded during this battle for receiving shrapnel from three exploding bombs. He was also in the battle of Bougainville and Salamaua.
