The McLaughlin community was stunned Sunday morning by the sudden passing of a 31-year resident and businessman, Jacob J.Schweigert. Mr. Schweigert had just finished the adult Sunday school class in his church when he suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 78. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the First Baptist Church at McLaughlin at 2 P.M. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Alfred Weisshar, superintendent of the Baptist Home for the Aged at Bismarck. Jacob J. Schweigert was born September 15, 1885 in Odessa,Russia. He was the son of Jacob and Katharina Schweigert. As a youth he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and was baptized in the Baptist faith before leaving the Old Country. "Jake", as he was better known, came to the United States in 1905. He first resided at Eureka where he was employed in a general store and in a blacksmith shop. A few years later he went to Ashley, ND where he met and married Emma Mayor (sic) on March 3, 1908. In 1912 the young couple moved to Bismarck, ND to make their home. There their eight children were born. Mr. Schweigert became an American citizen in 1913. He worked as a foreman in a garage in Bismarck for 18 years. In 1930 the family moved to Plevna, Mont. where he operated a repair shop until 1933 when he moved with his family to McLaughlin. Here he worked as a mechanic until 1937 when he became associated with Ford and also with John Deere farm machinery. He disposed of this business in 1955. In April 1949, he signed a contract with Chevrolet and in 1955 he acquired the Oldsmobile franchise at McLaughlin. He was joined by his son Ted in 1942 and the two have operated the Schweigert Chevrolet Company as a partnership since that time. His first wife, Emma, passed away in 1948 and in 1949 he married Emilia Quenzer (nee Dietterle).
