Another soldier came home from the war last week, but there was not the happy meeting with relatives that customarily marked the return of the others, especially those who had crossed the sea at their countries call. For this was the arrival from France of the silent form of Charles F Karnatz, who had died in that alien if friendly land while in the service of his country and whose relatives had asked that his remains be returned to his native land to rest beside those of his brother Edward, who had also died in service. Uniformed member of the American Legion, his comrades in arms, escorted the flag-draped casket to the Methodist Church in Burr Oak, Saturday afternoon, where funeral services were held, being conducted by Rev J A Stansbury, assisted by Rev W A Smith and Rev J G Demoret. The business of the town was suspended during the services and the church was filled to over-flowing with friends and acquaintances, come to do honor to the departed. Here the following obituary was read:
Private Charles F., eldest son of John and Lena Karnatz, was born near St Francis, Kansas, Sep 12, 1888 and departed this life in a hospital in France, October 6, 1918 age 30 years and 24 days. The cause of his death was lobar pneumonia. He came with his parents to Jewell County in 1909, where he lived at home with them until he answered his countries call as a volunteer Dec 12, 1917. Enlisting at Belleville, Kansas in the coast artillery, he was sent to Ft Logan, Colorado then to San Francisco, California and from there to France, at the time of his death being the Battery #, 52nd C A C. He was converted when a young man of 18 years in a meeting held by Reg Wigfield at Ensign schoolhouse and thereafter took his place in the family devotions. While being quiet and unassuming in his manner, he was always ready and anxious to help others in need. Charley was a great home boy, devoting his life to the cares and work of the farm. He had great regard for the wishes of his father and mother, being a model young man in the home life. He was a very affectionate son and considerate and brother and friend to all. Thus have the family been called upon the second time to offer a son upon the alter of their county. Edward dying at Camp Funston in Nov 1918. There are left to mourn their loss father, mother, 3 brothers, 1 sister, besides other relatives and friends.
In the beautiful Burr Oak cemetery the body was laid to rest with military ceremonies. Across the open grace was fired the salute to the dead the bugle sounded the farewell "Taps" and the remains of the American soldier were at last at rest near the scenes of his youth.

The funeral of Edward M Karnatz, who died at Camp Funston from the epidemic, was held at the home of his parents, north of town last Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev Stansbury, assisted by Rev Reynolds and burial was made in the Burr Oak cemetery. The following obituary was read at the funeral:
Edward Milton Karnatz, son of John and Lena Karnatz, was born near St Francis, Kans, December 13, 1894 and passed away at Camp Funston, Kansas October 15, 1918, age 23 years 10 months and 2 days.
In the year 1898 he came which his parents to Jewell county, where he remained until 1914 when he went to Canada, being there when the present war was declared.
About a year later on his way home, he stopped at Omaha and made application ?? the aviation corps, came on home and ?? ?? call. After filling ?? ?? were furnished him. ?? from them he ?? at Mankato, September 5, being placed in the 35th Co, 164th D. B. There he fell a victim of influenza, followed by pneumonia and passed on the evening of October 15 at 7:30 p.m.
His parents being notified of his illness left at once and reached his bedside the morning before his departure.
He knew them, giving them the happy smile of greeting but was unable to talk to them, yet they could hear him lisp the name of Jesus and lifting his eyes and clasping his hands as in prayer he quietly passed away.
He was converted when about 13 years of age and united with the Evangelical church, always carrying his testament with him.
While away from home and friends trapping in the north country he didn't forget his early training but in company with an aged indian held their evening devotions. Eddie was of quiet unassuming nature, devoted to his parents and loved ones.
He leaves to mourn his death the father and mother, four brothers and one sister: Charles F., in service in France; Otto H., Ernest H., Walter J and Effie M., all of Burr Oak. Two sisters in infancy preceded him to the better world. A host of relatives and friends also mourn his departure.
Truly he has given his life for his county as much as though he had fallen on the battlefield in France.

Patricia Alena, second daughter of Otto and Ruth Karnatz, was born December 28, 1934 at Santa Anna, California, living there until 1937 when she moved with her parents to Burr Oak, Kansas where she resided until time of her death. Patty Lee attended school at District 89 for 5 years and the Burr Oak school the last two years. She was a sunny disposition and general favorite with her playmates. Patty was stricken with infantile paralysis and taken to the Asbury Hospital at Salina, Kansas, April 20, 1946, where she passed away on Sept 21, 1946. Patty was reared in the Adventist Faith and gave her heart to Jesus at the age of two as soon as she could understand. She was faithful in reading the lesson and asking the blessing to those who cared for her. It certainly comforts our hearts to know she was ready to go, God saw fit to take our treasure from us be we yield to His will. Patty leaves to mourn her untimely passing 3 brothers, 2 sisters and 2 sister-in-laws, Kenneth and wife Lucille of California, Raymond and wife Loran of Burr Oak; Otto, Jr, Betty Jean and Virginia Irene of the home. She also leaves her aged grandparents, Mr and Mrs J F Karnatz of Burr Oak and D Wheeler of California besides several uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends. Private graveside services were held Monday afternoon at the Burr Oak Cemetery conducted by Rev L J Poe of Wesley Center.
