    Notizen:

    Elk Grobe Citizen:
Elk Grove citizens woke up Sunday morning to the shocking news that their beloved Strauss Festival founder Iris Zimbelman had passed away during the night. She was 84.
Although increasingly frail the past few years, Iris and husband Arnie were still out and about at Elk Grove community events, including last week’s Old Town Chili Festival. But a ruptured aorta (the main artery to the heart) caused her sudden death May 29.
It was in the early 1980s when the couple were traveling in Austria and watching waltz performances in Vienna’s Stadtpark that Iris conceived the idea of bringing such to Elk Grove. She returned home, organized a board of directors of seven and in 1985 began a two-year quest to present the first Strauss Festival which took place in July of 1987. This included writing a grant proposal for county funds for a permanent performing arts center in Elk Grove Regional Park which all know now as Strauss Island.
The festival has continued in July, free to the public, and this year will mark the 29th anniversary.
Iris was involved in many other community activities, always with the support of her husband Arnie who built many of the Strauss sets still used.
There is a public viewing from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 2 at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd. Services are private, however, there will be a public memorial at a later date.
