Thomas Seward Webster, Jr., age 85 of Hockessin, DE, went home to be with the Lord on April 15, 2015.
Tom was born in Cambridge, MD on April 22, 1929, son of the late Thomas, Sr. and Gertrude (Weber) Webster. Tom joined the Maryland Guard while still in high school, and earned the Expert rifleman award at the young age of 16. After graduating Cambridge High School class of 1946, he entered the United States Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1949.
After serving his country in the Marine Corps, he returned to his home town of Cambridge to work on the family farm, which is now the site of the Cambridge Airport. His farming career was short - as Tom would often say, "I Failed as a Farmer - didn't earn any money for a year!" These were still good times for Tom, as he had lots of friends and enjoyed driving his 1949 Chevy Convertible.
Tom then embarked on a successful business career. After leaving Cambridge for Wilmington Delaware, he attended Goldey College under the GI Bill, earning a degree in Accounting and Business Administration, and then went to Cades CPA School in Philadelphia, PA. Tom was truly gifted at finance, and was able to complete his degree and CPA work in just 2 years. In 1951 he began a long and successful career at DuPont. In his early career he worked as a clerk for Pierre S. du Pont, on the "150 year Anniversary Team" celebration. The celebration was held at the Hagley Museum, where Tom spent many hours researching the company records and history. Tom then moved to the Auditing division, and finished his career working in downtown Wilmington in the Tax department. In 1985 DuPont offered all their employees what is often referred to as the golden "5+5" early retirement, and Tom could not resist, moving on to a truly enjoyable and memorable retirement career of 30+ years. Tom was always thankful for that opportunity.
Tom enjoyed golf and watched the Masters tournament every year, but his true passion was boating. "Captain" Tom grew up on the water and was an avid boater at a young age, first with power boats and later with sail boats. He always seemed to have a collection of boats at the house, and kept each of them in pristine condition. He was a Life Member of the Wilmington Power Squadron earning Senior Navigator status. He enjoyed competing in boating contests, sailboat racing and just being out on the water with friends and family. After his sailing career, he switched to the next love - life on a trawler named "Estelle" -- and has enjoyed many a rum and coke on the upper deck. Cheers Tom! Tom was a thinker and tinkerer, always able to meet the challenge that was before him, whether it was repairing an engine, cutting down a tree, mastering celestial navigation, or understanding the latest stock market trends. He had a genuine interest in learning and teaching, and was always willing to make do with less.
He was a friend to many and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Kay Johnson Webster; his three children, daughters Lauren Webster Gunton (Michael), Alissa Kegelman (Joseph), son Thomas Webster III (Gail), and Kay Webster's daughter Ginny Carman (Bob); grandchildren Andrew and Patrick Coughlan, Lindsay Abrahams (Robert), Matthew Kegelman (Stephanie), Thomas Webster IV and Emily Webster, and Laura and Tom Carman; great-grandchildren Sylvia and William Abrahams; his sister Sylvia Webster Seer (Harold), sister-in-law Betty Webster, brother Roland Webster (Lois), sister Mary Webster Tunis (George), and his former wife Jill (Reese) Webster.
He was preceded in death by his brother Samuel Webster and sister Nancy Webster. The family wishes to thank Delaware Hospice and all the wonderful nurses and physicians who cared for Tom.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to any of the following charities: Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Road, Newark, DE, 19711, Limestone Presbyterian Church at the address below, and American Cancer Society (designate Cancer Research), 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720.
Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE, 19808 on Tuesday April 21, at 11AM, where friends may visit after 10AM.
