    REV. REUBEN J. SCHMIDT, age 83, of McFarland, WI, died on Friday, March 8, 2002, at home. He was born on July 13, 1918, in Hebron, NE, the son of Edward H. and Emma (Albrecht) Schmidt. Reuben married Lorraine A. Weller on January 7, 1945 in Ft. Wayne, IN. She preceded him in death on May 21, 1998.
    He graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO in 1944. Reuben was ordained July 2, 1944, at Hope Lutheran Church, Assistant Pastor of Hope Lutheran Church, St. Louis from 1944 until 1949; Pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and Kansas State University Lutheran Ministry, Manhattan, KS from 1949 until 1956; Missions and Stewardship Counselor, Iowa District West, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod from 1956 until 1961; Secretary of North American Missions and Special Ministries of LCMS in St. Louis from 1961 until 1974; Pastor of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Cincinnati, OH from 1974 until 1984; English District Mission Board from 1985 until 1992; and retired to Lake James in Angola, IN in 1984.
    Reuben was a member of the Board of Lutheran Deaconess Association, Valparaiso, IN; the Board of Directors of Wheat Ridge Foundation; Interim Pastorates (twice) at Peace Lutheran Church, Fremont, IN and at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Hudson, IN and a special final congregational family at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Janesville, WI.
    He authored numerous articles and booklets in the area of missions/stewardship and was a planning consultant to many churches in the English District-LCMS. Reuben received an honoray doctorate of divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in 1973.
    He is survived by his children, Thomas (Kathy) Schmidt of Manhattan, NY, Margaret Phillips of Madison, WI, Paul (Jane) Schmidt of McFarland, WI, Julia (Daniel) Lehmann of Chicago, IL, Timothy (Lori) Schmidt of Topeka, KS, Gretchen (Jim) Doerr of Malvern, PA; 13 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Schmidt.
    A memorial service and music celebration which was planned by Reuben before his death will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN Church, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, WI, at noon on Saturday, April 6, 2002.
