While on his voyage returning to Virginia, he was elected (1774) a member of the House of Burgesses, being just 21 years old.Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Fort Nelson, built in Louisville, Kentucky in 1782, was named in his honor, as was Nelson County, Virginia
