Erna M. Carlson, 81, of Vermillion, SD passed away Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital.
Erna Frank was born May 26, 1934 in Gregory, SD to Fred and Ernestine (Ulmer) Frank. She married Carl Carlson on May 15, 1955 in Burke, SD. They made their home in rural Chamberlain, SD, during which time they had three children. They moved to the Vermillion area in 1962 where she worked alongside Carl on the farm until 1995 when they moved into Vermillion.
Erna enjoyed embroidery, playing cards, and having coffee with friends. She was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Vermillion and a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion.
Erna is survived by her children: Mike (Kathy) Carlson of Vermillion, Diane (Brian) Phelps of Jenks, OK; and Julie (Mark) Zweep of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brothers Milton (Alicia) Frank and Elmer Frank; sister-in-law Iola Frank; and brothers-in-law Roy Goodman and Lowell Carlson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; two brothers, Gilbert Frank and John Frank; and four sisters: Leona Allum, Viola Waterbury, Alice Carlson, and Sara Goodman.
A prayer service will be Sunday, February 7 at 4:00 pm, with the family present from 2-4 pm at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am on Monday, February 8 at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Vermillion.
