Strickler, a student had donethis as a project, and had limited space so the writings are incomplete, unfortunatley. The diary starts out with the author returning home fromShippensburg on Sept. 10, 1830. He had been interested in talk of landwest of the Allegheny Mountains and planned on looking into the matter.
Sept. 24, 1830..... I went as far as Carlisle with Brother John andhis five companions who are on their way to Ohio. On account of father'shealth. I am forced to remain here.
Aug. 28, 1831....We started early today on our journey. Father, Betsyand the little ones rode in the wagon, which caries our necessities: andthe and myself armed with the rifle and some axes, walked along urgingthe team over the rough ground. we camped and night, hobbling the mulesto keep them from straying.
By Oct. 25, 1831 they had reached Brother John's place in RichlandCounty, Ohio. by March 14, 1835 he writes that he is tired of trying tofarm this broken and hilly land. He has heard of lands in Indiana to behad for a dollar and quarter for an acre.
Sept. 30, 1835 he has sold his land in Ohio and with Mike Secrist and Mr.Clever they start out on foot. They eventually find a guide and areshown land along the River Eel just up the bluff from Wabash Town. Theauthor likes the area and decides he will build here, Mike will take landjust one mile away, but Mr. Clever don't like the place and is anxious toreturn to Ohio.
October 18, 1835... All three of us kept together until we reachedthe land office at Ft. Wayne , where Mike and I entered our lands .Clever got a horse and went on.
