Robert Vilhauer, age 89, of Huron, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at the SunQuest Health Care Center. His funeral service was at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 10th, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kevin Channell officiating. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Robert Vilhauer was born April 15, 1922, to Emanuel and Bertha (Guthmiller) Vilhauer at Tripp. He lived on a farm near Highmore and attended country schools.
On March 2, 1952, Robert married Eva A. Wenz at the Presbyterian parsonage in Huron.
Robert started summer road construction work in 1942. During the winters he would haul ice that was cut from Ravine Lake to be used in iceboxes and for other refrigeration needs. From 1969 to 1986, he worked for the South Dakota State Highway Department doing road maintenance. After his retirement, he worked for the South Dakota State Fair from 1988 to 2002.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Robert loved working with horses and putting up hay.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, August, Richard and Eugene Vilhauer; one sister, Eileen Haase; and one grandson, Thomas Matthew Friedrichsen.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Eva of Huron; two daughters, Diane (Joel) Westberg of Mount Vernon and Brenda (Doug) Friedrichsen of Huron; six grandchildren, Tonya Westberg, Stacey (Chris) Jaeschke, Bo Westberg, Crystal Friedrichsen, Andrea Friedrichsen and Robert Friedrichsen; two great-grandsons, Reid Blain and Carsen Jaeschke; three brothers, Ed (Shirley) Vilhauer of Eugene, Oregon, Alvin (Betty) Vilhauer of Rainer, Oregon and Jake (Nadean) Vilhauer of Huron; three sisters, Carolyn (James) Shabram of Sioux Falls, Leona (Jerry) Mattke of Sun City West, Arizona and O'Linda Lonborg of Aloha, Oregon; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
